sand sifting starfish

they move very slowly, sifting the sand for food. Maybe those in the lfs were not healthy ? anyway they need sand to sift, if they are in an empty tank they will just stay still.

you could also get sea urchins, sand gobies, sand dollar

to clean up the sand if u do not fancy the stars

The sand sifting star is the brown/beige one, right? How about the blue or orange star, will it clean the sand too? Will the hermit crab attack the star?

Wah so many questions...

1) Yes, the ugly beige ones (refer to pix)

2) The Blue and Orange Linckias do not clean the sand bed, they are good for cleaning glass surface and LR

3) Nope, hermit do not attack a healthy star fish (not that I know of)... unless you are talking about extra huge hermits

those colored stars are different ones.... they dont provide the same job as a sand-shifting star. I have one in my 2 ft (sand-shifting star) and its constantly moving around the tank bottom, but very slowly. Used to have algae on the sand surface coz not much water movment but the star solved the problem.

You can opt for sand dollars and urchins too, they help in maintaining the tank bottom. :)
