SRC Member Randy Posted April 13, 2008 SRC Member Share Posted April 13, 2008 Is it ok to have rubber band in the water for long term? I use that to tie something to the sump compartment in the tank. thanks.
SRC Member peacemaker Posted April 13, 2008 SRC Member Share Posted April 13, 2008 I'm not sure if it'll have any effects to your water, but why don't you use a cable tie instead? Hassle free tightening with a better grip, and it won't deform over time. Any local hardware store will sell it.

SRC Member arcanehacker Posted April 13, 2008 SRC Member Share Posted April 13, 2008 Rubberband will break of every few months.. I've tried before. Plastic cable tie should be better. Quote Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth? SRC Member cdckjn Posted April 14, 2008 SRC Member Share Posted April 14, 2008 I agree that cable tie is best as the material used is nylon. Nylon is more inert - less reactive to seawater compared to rubber band. The rubber elastic will degraded over time and will not provided the necessary tightening force. http://images.google.com.sg/images?q=cable...sa=N&tab=wi

SRC Member wil_lee76 Posted April 18, 2008 SRC Member Share Posted April 18, 2008 DO NOT USE metal or rubber band..as what other reefers mentioned.. metals consists of heavy materials that might affect your tank.... U can opt for plastic materials like cable ties....safer and more reliable..im using it.. Hope these helps!
nchin
Depending on how you intend to fasten the pieces, cable ties may be too stiff and inflexible. You may want to consider using "plastic-string", which are those "string" that are attached to the openning of plastic bags - go buy a packet of kopi from any coffee shop and you will get a free string.:-)

nchin
so that is bio safe? In my opinion, it should be safe because those plastics bags are used to serve drinks in Singapore and I believe they should be food grade materials. I have used them in my tank without problem. I also used them for my garden plants, also no problem. It also helps in re-cycling waste - you are going to throw them away after your drinks, right?. Use them at your own risks, I can't "pow-chiak" for you.
