jeremywe
Hi everyone... 2 Months into this hobby and I couldn't help but learn to frag my own mushrooms after reading so much about it. Hope you guys can pardon my ignorance. I've got a blue spotted mushroom on a small rock. I've cut it off using a scissors at the stem and then sliced up the heads into 2 pieces across the mouth. I then used a bridal veil to tie it across both the pieces onto the small rock. Now, my questions are: - How tight do we tie them? What happens if its too tight? - How long does it take for the to attach? - How do i know if they have attached? Remove the veil? If i remove it and its not attached, does it mean its back to square 1 and wait all over again? - Lastly, on the original stem, i've heard that it'll regenerate into a new mushroom. However, after day 1, i see some curly white stuff on it. What does that tell? Here are the photos of it - day 1. Also, I'm trying to get my red mushroom (unfragged and untouched) to attach itself to a piece of rock. However, after day 3, it seems like its spitting out strings of black slime from its mouth. Funnily, it seems like it has 2 mouth now (2 volcano looking peaks on the single mushroom head spitting out strings of the black slime). What is that black slime, and what does it mean when this happens? Its it really 2 mouths i'm seeing or something else? If its 2 mouths, how come the 2nd one appeared? Gonna split? Thanks so much in advance for the help and guidance.. Hope my first frag wouldn't be discouraging.
Senior Reefer yikai Posted March 31, 2009 Senior Reefer Share Posted March 31, 2009 in my opinion, u do not have to tie them too tightly. just tight enuf for the base of the mushroom to touch the rock without it floating away. it should take around 1-2weeks for it to attatched. i tried this with xenia and it took 5 days to stick to the rock. try not to touch and disturb them during this period. they are stressed out from being fragged. yes the original stem will regen into a new mushroom. ignore the curly white stuff. as long as it is not melting, it will be fine. mushrooms are seriously resilient. the string of black stuff it is spitting out is either waste or its own zooxanthellae. if it has 2 mouths, it may split on its own. but this may take awhile. no worries and again as long as it is not melting, i would not get too worried. corals spit out "black" stuff all the time. they do that when they finish digesting a meal, or when u change them to different lighting positions. SRC Member TayHongSiang Posted April 1, 2009 SRC Member Share Posted April 1, 2009 It will split out slime when stressed...but its ok. After 2 weeks you can safely removed the "veil"....sometimes you will encounter 2 heads...i have one like that, but i do not intend to frag it. If you want to accelerate the growth of your frags...dose amino acids...one product you can use is Kent Marine Accent which i got it from reef depot....it will help yr frags to develop tissue growth faster. ambystoma82
if u have done a lot of reading up on the net basically e general methods r there already... 1% is skill 99% is luck... nt always work on all mushroom even if u fail dun b dishearted.. its nt a 100% death proof fragging method .. after cutting subject the shrooms to higher flow,to let e flow prevent e wound frm collecting debris thus infection to it.. e white stuff coming out is the tissue receeded trying to cover up the wound,if after u cut it after a long while there is still no white receeding tissue covering up most likely will up lorry soonz.. else u can use the smelling method.. dont do water change at the moment, unless your tank is like really no choice due for water change.. do the water change b4 u wan to frag.. remb to kiss it after unveiling.. lolx.. jeremywe
Thanks for all the replies guys.. Today, the red mushroom seems like its giving out more slime from the whole center of the mushroom. I've never fragged it, i just simply netted it around on a rock. Is it melting? I've attached an updated picture of the mushroom. Really looks like its melting. How can i save it? Its my favorite bright red mushroom.

Its my favorite bright red mushroom. the mouth of a mushroom is quite small and from the pic, i can see that the "slime" is not coming from the mouth, rather from the coral itself! i am very certain that it is melting. take it out to smell. if it smells atrocious, it is melting. and you should remove it because it MAY spread to ur other frags. since ur frags are kinda stressed from fragging now, u want to prevent all bacteria and other stuff from infecting it. take out that red mushroom asap if it is really melting. as for saving it, very hard....i have no idea how. maybe someone might know. SRC Member iskay Posted April 1, 2009 SRC Member Share Posted April 1, 2009 Brown stringy slime are zoos being expelled. If the water flow doesn't take them away, you should vacuum it away from the frag. It may be be better if you can induce the mushroom to release it hold from the live rock so that you don't have to cut off the base. Less lesions, better chance of survival. Senior Reefer yikai Posted April 1, 2009 Senior Reefer Share Posted April 1, 2009 please make sure that the slime is coming from the mouth and not from the mushroom flesh. if its from the flesh then probably its melting.

jeremywe
Oh man!! That is so sad. I recently got that red mushroom about 5 days ago. It fell of the rock it was on in the LFS and they gave it to me. It looked perfect and for the last few days it was doing well too. In my tank, i secured it the way as shown in the picture. If it really is a goner, I'm curious to find out what could be the most likely reason so that i can learn from my mistakes. Any advice? Cheers and thanks for the help! There's another method of fragging which i learnt from youtube.com whereby you do not need to use mesh to hold them....just place yr frags in a small tub with small rocks inside...they will automatically attached themselves on it. watch and enjoy. Oh crap!! infectious? Any advice on what i should do now? I've removed the rotten mushie and wiped the area clean with kitchen tissue, then placed it back into my tank. Any potential problems? If so, what remedial actions should i take? Thanks!

Thanks! why u put back the rock into the tank? are there any mushies on that rock? if its just an emty rock with nothing i would just throw away unless thre are other frags on it. if you have any furan around ur house (high doubt that), a furan dip will be fantastic. kills all germs and bacteria imediately. if u dun hav furan, an iodine dip may help. but i will not suggest doing anything to ur mushy frags unless u see them starting to melt. dun stress them out furthur. becoz there is a chance that they might not even be infected at all. dun fix an unbroken pipe (:

They had the white curly stuff coming out of their mouths when i placed them back into the tank, but disappeared after an hour. Hope they'll be fine. boxerz
The white stuff are their digestive filaments, and mushrooms do that when stressed. As long as they retract those filaments, they will be ok. If those filaments stay hanging out even hours after settling down, something may be stressing them.
ambystoma82
try nt to use furan two unless u hate e zoas more than e disease... really really bo bian then try... btw bro tissue paper wiping is useless against e bacteria.. u cant even kill them with FW, btw e half a mushies left is recovering ? red mushies time to time r available at ah beng place.. if u wan exotic ones then go to GO... u using scissors or knife to cut ? try to use knife.. if best try dun detach e mushroom frm rock n cut them straight on rock... they recover faster tht way.. BTW, the red mushroom was not cut in anyway. It just fell of a rock from another tank (in GO, hence the super bright neon red colour), and i brought it over and tried "pasting" it on a rock with the help of a bridal veil. GO very ex leh... I just want 1 or 2 piece so i can grow it myself. I did try cutting mushroom, the blue one. I used a scissors to cut them between the roots on the rocks and the top, so part of the stem was left behind (hoping for the stem to regenerate). Then, i took the scissors to cut the top flap into halfs. Both seems to be fine and one of the halfs is actually growing around its mouth. Amazing, all within a few days. The stem also seems OK. Lets hope i get 3 blue mushies out of this. Can make up for my RIP neon red one.
