It's normal. I keep them in 5 gallons and they go missing. That's why I bought 10. I should be able to see a few that way, provided they don't reduce each other to 1.

Always something more important than fish.

i love suns but my laziness always gets the better of me.

seeing them turn from orange to grey due to STN caused by under-feeding is so depressing.

yea.. thats the down side of keeping suns sadly..

have to keep feeding, esp the normal suns :(

i believe if they can photosynthesize the price of suns wouldnt be so cheap already.. haha..

nice suns kiko!

might grab 1 at LCK this weekend :chair:

whats your tank temp.

you feed them (then they open?) or what time do they open for your case..

wait lazy tof eed them at night :chair:

yea.. still have alot when i left...

i think getting the $60 is more worth it..

you'll know what i mean when you're there :)

tank temperature is 26-28 degrees..

the super suns opened immediately within minutes after i blew the "smell" of henry's food over them... (lights were not on yet)

when they came out i started target feeding them...

after the lights came on, they remained open all the way,

until right now they're still open..

amazing!

one of the heads out of the 7 i got however didnt open at all despite all the feedings..

hopefully over time i can get it to open...

kiko bro, found this on net.

Scientific Name : Tubastrea sp, Dendrophyllia sp

Origin : Indo Pacific Oceans

DIfficulty : Medium

Temperature : 72 - 82°F

Diet : Carnivore

The sun corals are some of the most stunning corals every offered in the marine aquarium industry. They are called sun corals after their polyps which can expand or contract on will.

They are normally collected around Indonesian and Fiji waters and are somewhat common. The two main species covered here are the Tubastrea and Dendrophyllia variants.

<br class="floatclear">

Tubastrea

2239535_f248.jpg2239538_f248.jpg

Tubastrea

Sun corals from the species Tubastrea are by far the most common found for sale. Coloration ranges from a rich orange to yellow.

Tubastrea are non photosynthetic corals that require feeding. Each head has a mouth that captures passing prey.

Because they do not possess an ######, waste is expelled through their mouths which is confirmation that god does indeed, have a sense of humor.

In the wild they are found in shaded areas that have good flow. While the flow rate in captivity should be emulated, they can also do well under direct light.

Problems that may arise include the growth of algae on the coral rock itself. But if you have hair algae or any other nuisance algae growing on any rock in your aquarium, your tank has problems.

Ideally, they should be fed everyday but they get by with feedings three to four times a week. Feed them meaty foods like raw chopped seafood and mysis shrimp

Actually SuperSuns are Balanophyllia, not Dendrophyllia... But the care pretty similar..

cant find much info on the actual species of "supersun" coral itself..

when google supersun,

most of the time results of the normal sun coral comes up..

although yea,

the care of it is very much the same...

no.

Suncoral = Tubastrea sp. the one commonly offered in our market is Tubastrea fulkneri. (google this scientific name)

Super Sun = Dendrophyllia sp. There are four, maybe more, species of Dendrophyllia. D. gracilis, D. arbuscula, D. fistula and the super rare super beautiful, D. ramea. The supersuns from LCK are Dendrophyllia fistula. Do a google search on these.

Balanophyllia is different from the above two. they are very uncommon and always come in only 1-4 heads.

This is balanophyllia. Look at the skeleton and compare with super sun. it's different.

Balanophyllias have very smooth edges on the lip of the corallite, and the tentacles are either transparent, lime green, pink or orange.

wow thanks lemon..

even typing "super sun coral" on google doesnt give me much information..

i also wanted to find out why this species of sun had been banned from coming to our shores..

do you happen to know the reason as well?

you should write a book one day,

i'm serious.. lol..

nice catch on the pipes. I used to have a few of them. Must have pods. Mysis.. IMHO, very tough.

Side track a little...

Lemon, balanoxxxx... It's the same as those u IDed for me previously yah? (still surviving)

yea..

trying to get it to feed on mysis..

currently still on pods...

not sure how long can it last...

like to see it swim..

slow and peaceful..

some indo zoas i got from iwarna today..

HUGE rocks..

any idea how can i frag them?

i dont need such a big rock and i think a normal knife wouldnt work..

Bro, auntie usually has a chopper (kinda rusty by now) and a hammer near the packing counter. You can borrow it the next time to do your own fragging on the spot. Place the blade on the rock, swing down with the hammer on top of the blade, ta da!
