pistol shrimp in my tank

Recommended Posts

for reasons inexplicable to me, my colleagues have introduced (or rather thrown) a pistol shrimp that was caught at punggol park into my tank.

initially it was really cute.

But now its just a bloody pest - (1) stirs up sand that irritate my corals. (2) 'Shoots' me when I come near the tank.

getting bigger also. im surprised it even surviced without acclimatizing. But seriously any idea how to catch that bugger? i really fear for my other friendly shrimps and my tank. Don't want it to shatter, or is that just a myth?

when in doubt, get a hammer..

It will not shatter your glass... The clicking sounds by the pistol shrimp is due to the quick snapping of its claw which sends jets of water that create the sound... Will not go into details... LOL...

The pistol will lose to the mantis...

Hi Bro

To catch a pistol shrimp, you can self made a trap. Use a 9/12 or 12/16 mm eheim rain bar and cap one end. Place this rain bar near to the pistol shrimp location, then inject some mysis shrimp thru the holes. It should attract the pistol into the bar. Good luck....

Use 16/22 rain bar if your pistol shrimp is bigger.

like terryz said, breaking of normal aquarium glass from a pistol is nonsense. it does create very high speed, and "hot" bubbles from snapping its claws but too long to type also. main thing is, they are quite harmless unlike mantis. i have 1 big wild one in my tank for a year and nothing happen to my ornamental shrimps. if you wanna trap it, it can be quite hard unless u follow the bait technique listed above. but make sure you know where it lives.

Firstly it will not shatter your glass tank.. we must first know that the clicking sound is not made by knocking their pincers on the glass.. its actually the clasping of their pincers that makes the noise (something to do with air and sound). This is sorta a way for them to shock small LS.. its their way of defense.

For smaller tanks with little hiding space, it can be a headache. they then to move sand all over the place..

Mine however has been hiding in a cozy dark cave ever since I got it a yr or 2 back.. never ever push out any sand for some reason.. Just the occasional clicking sound which is pretty amusing till now.. hehe.

I can't even remember which species is it cos I hardly see it.. hardly as in once every few months and its usually partial..

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?
