Flame angel vs clam

Hi,

turning to all the experienced reefers to seek your expertise here. i have a flame angle with me for 1 year+, healthy bright colours and the plus plus point is that it does not bother my soft, hard sps corals.

however, i notice that it at times, not always, disturb my clams. sometimes it swims past without really bothering them, even when it nip the shell not the flesh. however, sometimes, it just nip on the flesh n cause the clam to retract and open.

My questions are;

1. will this cause stress to my clams and eventually kill it?

2. is such FA unique or hard to come by since it does not bother my corals? cos some say 50/50 or even 80/20 that FA may nip corals.

with the answers, i will be able to make a wiser decision, to keep flame or to keep clam or both

thks in advance.

dwarf angels are really quite reefsafe, especially flame angel. none of the dwarf angels eat corals in the wild and certainly don't eat tridacna clams. In our tanks, they may sample corals on occasion but it's usually nothing serious as this is not their main diet. however some species tend to peck more and eventually the coral will die not because it's being eaten alive, but because of stress and damage. one good example is the lemonpeel angel which loves pecking on LPS.

thus the occasional pecking will not do anyharm to corals and clams. however, if the pecking is very often on your clam, your clam will close up and eventually die.

so you be the judge. isit doing it so often that the clam is very stressed and does not want to open? if so, remove the flame angel or remove the clam.

Thks for your knowledge lemon lemon and thks for sharing your experience clam chowder.

My clams always open and wide under the sun n light, close when pecked but open straight after. will like to keep both.

thks once again.

IME, flame angel has got itchy mouth, on most occasions, they wont harm corals while pecking.

they just seem to want a taste of their slime.

so dun worry to much on it

If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
