Recently I was thinkng of changing to 6 x 54w T5 light set instead of my 2 x 150w MH and 2 x 54w T5 light set. But a lot people r trying out led because of the lower watt, low heat and less chillar running time. So I also go and take a look. Hee only maxspect G2-110w is within my budget and i need at least 2 set. Then i do a compare between both set and now i am confuse, should i go for LED or 6 x 54w t5 lightset? Maybe u all can take a look to see if I should change to Led where the technology is still new or go for t5 set where result is proven and the tank look better. Below is the compare:

From the calculation, I taking into consideration that led produce less heat so the chillar will kick in less.

Let assume I dun buy 6 x 54w T5 but buy 2 x G2-110w Led instead.

So every mth, I will save around ($105.11 - $82.87) = $22.24, so 1 yr will be $266.88. Every yr need to change T5 light tube for the 6 x 54w T5 set, say 1 T5 light tube around $35, 6 x 35 = $210 so total saving will be $476.88.

For 4 year will be 476.88 x 4 = $1907.52. From the calculation the saving is quite a lot for 4 years.

However After 3 yrs, Led light set will need to change the led blub. In G2-110w lightset, there is total 36 x 3w led bulb, 1 piece $10, 36 piece = $360 and 2 light set total will be $720.

From the calculation, From the start of the 4th year, the total saving will drop from $1907.52 to $1187.52.

If We calculate the cost price of the lightset in, 6x54w t5, de-lighting set is $560, 2 set of G2-110w is $1060, different of $500

Hence the total saving after 4th yr will be $1187.52 - $500 = 687.52 ($171.88 per yr)

This finding make me wonder should i change to Led or stick to t5 lightset, which already proven good result for coral grown. Any comment?

In long term which ever can save more will go for that.

1 more important thing is we dun always think of saving $,if there's chance where we can save environment we should go for it too.

$ anytime can earn.

Cheers...

Depends on what coral are you keeping... I dunno about maxspect but Lumenaqua is doing quite well for me as regards to zoas... They are growing...

Keeping mostly zoas and lps. for the lumenaqua what model is that and how big area can it cover? 2 feet? Thanks.

Kind of agree also. but how about the change of LED bulb, for changing t5 lighttube is like pay $210 every yr, compare to $720 after 3 yr. although they r almost the same when add up, i feel paying $210 every yr is easier.

LED lightings may give u more technical problems...cost savings is there...but LED driver spoil easily...timer may breakdown or go bonkers....etc...

i have not witness any reefers using maxspect for more than 3 yrs...so far...so durability is still a question mark ???

For me I'll choose LED. Reason due to I'm the kind of person that perfer long term maintainence over short term n of coz my budget is anything not more than 50% I'm ok with it.

Somemore LED look more nice more high class wahaha...

T5 are the best!! led still not so stable yet... t5 easy to change bulbs and are sold in any LFS! but for led, its sold in specialised shops which is not so convenient! and led got transformer, so if your led's give problem, u gotta crack ur head to find if its the bulbs or transformer! i've been using t5's for 2 years now! they are great and my corals look great too! =) As years pass, led will fade off! the lighting spectrum will decrease! yes! T5 also!! but it is said that u shouldn't change all your bulbs at once! so lets say, you have 4 t5 bulbs, from back to front name them by months! so from the back will be Dec, Nov, Oct, Sep! so every year when the months approach, just change them accordingly! and you can save up alot instead of spending money one shot! i do this for my setup! hope it helps! Cheers!
