I used to have it a long time ago...If I remembered correctly, it is due to poor circulation or stagnant area. And should be removed as it spreads...

Just what is he supposed to know by smelling the rock? How does it help answer his qn and help remedy his problem?

could it be something has rotten and normally that is the first sign, by smelling the rock....if its real bad, best remove it from tank then let it pollute the tank....just wondering

Correct.

That LR looks like it's badly uncured.... and that web thingy is the remains of die-offs. A whiff will confirm it.

If his tank is cycled, he should remove the LR and brush off the dying organisms on it.

If his tank is uncycled, he can either keep it to start the ammonia introduction (but he has to be careful that his tank doesn't crash due to too much ammonia killing off everything in this tank in a cascading effect) or he can brush it off if he likes.

It smells bad looks like i have to throw it away as my tank have just completed cycling , didnt want to start again. sign....thought of having some micro algae.

Anyway that is the sump...hmm...looks like the poor circulation is the cause
