Restarting after Ich and Brooklynella

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My 3FT tank of 3 Angels and 2 Tangs was completed wiped out by Ich and Brooklynella 2 weeks back.

The tank was left running without any fishes but with some soft corals and two shrimps.

Can any kind souls advise will the diseases die off by itself without any fish to host on for 2/3 weeks?

Can I do a 20% water change and start buying new fish, do not want any unnecessary casualties.

Thanks!!

Think is Ard 40 days if remembered correctly. No harm stretching abit longer to play safe. During this period, do dose bacteria and parazi, etc. Thereafter, stock up slowly and monitor. Best to set up qt for new fish in future before adding to main tank.

Tank : 4 X 2 X 2 with low iron front panel and external overflow

Skimmer : BK SM200 with waste collector

Return Pumps : Red Dragon 6m3 and Ehiem 1262

FR : 2 X Deltec 509 & powered by AB2000

Nitrate Filter : Deltec NF 509 and tee off from AB2000

Calcium R'tor : Deltec PF 501 with RM secondary chamber

Kalkwasser R'tor : Deltec KM500

Chiller : Pansonic 1 HP Compressor with 20m titanium Coil

Wave Makers : 4 X Tunze 6055 with 7096 & Vortec MP40w

Controller : GHL Profilux

Lighting : ATI Powermodule 10 or 8 tubes

Water Top-up : Water Top-Up tank powered by Tunze Osmolator

External Monitor : American Pinpoint pH and Temp. Monitor for main tank and GHL Profilux Controller to measure temp, pH, Redox

Ozonizer : Sander C50

UV : Corallife 6x

Hi Bro,

Thanks for the advice. Can I know what is parazi?

Is there any other indicators to test if water is less of such diseases.

You can find parazi from our sponsor Aquafauna or Irwanna. Unfortunately there is no test kit to test if the water is free of diseases. Doing a major water change or using Ozone / UV may cut short the process but still it is best to leave the system fish-less for about 4 ~ 6 week so that the ich will die by itself without a host.

If you are not planning to quarantine your fishes then it's only a matter of time before dIsease wipes your tank again.

Doesn't matter if you kill all parasites now and prazi and what not. When u add new fish without discretion and quarantine, your fIshes will get infected again.

If you don't want to do quarantine at least stock slowly and stock with discretion to reduce risk but not eliminate disease.

Doing fresh water dips to remove flukes will help too.

For angel, fresh water dip is alright. For some other fragile fishes, do search more to confirm fresh water dip method. All the best.

Greatly appreciate all for sharing your experience.

I will be patient and wait for 6 weeks before adding new fish into tank.

And i learnt my lesson that QT is very critical to reduce intro of diseases.

Keep fingers crossed it will work out fine for next wave of fishes.

Thanks!
