can I use a regular AC/DC adaptor to power a DIY LED?

please see attached pic.. take note i just put the string there at the middle for fail safe reason.. i am really concerned that the hanging kit cable slips and the whole thing ends up inside the tank. the thing on the corner of the fan are blue tacks :rolleyes:

nope. i don't think regular AC/DC adaptor is enough to light up these LEDs. unless your adaptor can produce the output as the LED driver.

The reason why the driver feels hot is because it's running at full load.

Looking at the pictures, the output of the driver is 51V (max) @ 680mA. That's about about 34.68W.

12 x 3W LEDs gives us a power requirement of 36W.

The good news is that your LEDs will not burn out because the driver max output is at 680mA, 20mA short of the max 700mA.

The bad news is your LED driver will have a relatively short life span (don't ask me how short!).

Your mileage might vary but I would change to a 36V or 48V(depends on how hard you want to drive your LEDs), 1.5A LED driver (about 50W/70W) and fit in a 700mA fuse at the output side. Or use this to drive to drive 2 strings of 12 x 3W LED (but it will also be quite hot!)

hi bros,

An update after around 4 months. Everything is working fine, and the corals seems to be ok with LED. No heat problems, slightly warm to touch.

The only 2 complaints I have with the current arrangements are:

1. When I point the wavemaker to create ripples on the surface, there is some slight spotlighting, i.e. blue is separated from white. This is especially obvious when I'm taking pictures (note: its hung about 2 feet from the bottom of the tank)

2. The centre of the tank seems to be too bright, I suspect this might be because there are too many overlapping beams.

therefore I might try to put the dies in 2 clusters, radion-style :yahoo:

The only problem is with separating the dies from the heatsink..

True...MeanWell LED driver is much more reliable...

I'm using it for my current newly DIY LED...

So far looking good....

Corals seems to be adapting to it....

Tank : 3 x 2 x 1.8 ( setup end Feb 2014 ) --> 4 x 2 x 1.8 ( setup early Nov 2016 )
