I am currently h2o salt user, but recently got some concerns:

1. heard this salt may be the same salt as redsea pro under different packaging

2. Increased price since label changed.

3. High Kh (ard 10) vs my tank is 7.9

Did some research and found another salt got good reputation in US. Reef Crystal from instant ocean.

Kh ard 8.and cheap also.

Just want to get some advice from bros here who used or is using this salt. What is actrual parameters? And how do u feel it? Best if got compared w DD salt.

Thanks

Dd h20 salt are from red sea. Big 3 are buff to different levels from the red sea pro.

I stuck to red sea pro due to many reason:

- kh at 11, my tank is 7 to 7.6. I do 5% wc weekly. It increases my kh by about 1dkh. No big issue

- believe that it has more elements and good stuff compared to instant ocean.

- high pottasium. 410 to 420 if i remember correctly.

-high mg. Despite having a sps dominated tank. Ive never dosed mg before in my tank. My wc keeps the mg high.

- cheap price. It cost aroune 80 bucks for the coral pro. Dd h20 is 20% higher from the same place i got the coral pro.

- clearity within 15 to 20mins of mixing.

If u do major wc each time and using a salt with high dkh. U can mix the salt overnight. I try mixing a pail of coral pro overnight and dkh dropped to aroune 8-9.

I recently switched to reef crystal after reading some gd reviews from overseas forum and also becos its way cheaper than DD H2Ocean. But apparently this salt doesn't dissolve as well as compared to DD H2Ocean which I was using previously. Not sure if I'm the only one who encountered this, it sometimes give off a fishy kind of smell after aerating with a water pump after a few hrs.

Other than that, no negative effects found when using reef crystals.

Yes bro. Odd.

And redsea pro recommend to use the set in 2 hours after mixed. While Dd recommend to use after 24 hour mixing.

The longer u mixed the salt the lower Kh. I used to test my Dd salt mixed abt 5 days. Kh ard 4 only.

Thanks bro. True, it won't affect kh a lot. But just want my kh to be more stable. And now seems very hard to get rsp salt.

Thanks bro for the feedback. Need a bit more time to see if it is good for coral to adapt. Even my DD salt also not fully dissolved

Currently im using red sea as its the closest to my parameters that im keeping. IO is good , but quite alot people says that the batch parameters are not consistent now. Claude from faunamarin pointed out a bad review of h2o : http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=45707&page=6 I also remembered seeing him posted red sea salt and tropic marin are both one of the best if im not wrong. I am using tropic main salt. The big 3 to if less no issue I just need to buff only after water change. The important is the trace element from the salt. Tropic main salt trace element very good. Big 3 we can buy and dose bec it cheaper. But trace element hard and not many trusted trace element brands.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been using reef crystal from day 1 of my current setup for the simple reasons of it being cheaper. However, for the duration of using the 6 tubs, I find it really difficult to get my Mg levels up.... They were constantly dwelling at 1200+. I had to dose 250-300g MgCl each time I do a water change. There after, I changed to red sea coral pro, I have good parameters and good coralline algae growth which I didn't have over the past 6 months I was using reef crystal.

Now, my concerns are that I find significant difference between the dissolution rate. Reef crystal dissolves completely within an hour of mixing and is good to go. On the other hand, coral pro seems to be still cloudy 2 hours after mixing and the cloudiness continues for the next couple of hours after water change in contrary to reef crystal.

I will probably give DD a try next.

P/s : I don't really trust the tables which tabulate the different parameters of different salt. I've tested all the salts I used and they differ greatly from batch to batch. I've gotten Mg as low as 1100 and have not exceeded 1240 throughout the different tubs of reef crystal salt. And for the skeptics, I send my fresh mix sample to the medical lab to test for Mg when I persistently had Mg problems... Just need to test the accuracy of salifert test kit, which I must say, is pretty accurate
