Currently eyeing on Sony cyber-shot DSC-P2, retail at SGD699. One can also buy its underwater case for underwater photography. Any comments on this particular model ? Thanks. roger
I got a friend who bought this camera. Let me ask him for you. He is a scubadiver and I think he bought this camera for shooting underwater. Are you a diver also? I am not but thinking of trying!
SRC Member dfstan Posted September 19, 2002 Author SRC Member Share Posted September 19, 2002 i do dive occasionally. Achilles Tang
hello dfstan! I am a diver too! Was actually planning a dive trip to Sipadan this month or Oct but will have to postpone to next year coz of my new reef tank project. I use my Canon G2 with Ikelite underwater housing. I haven't bought a strobe yet but am using the UK Lightcannon as a video light. Want to see some of my photos? I posted on AQ before but I guess I can duplicate them here too! Enjoy! Achilles Tang
Green turtle, I think! It swam very very fast! Had very little time to adjust from macro shot to zoom in on him! Shot a bit blur!

Paiseh... no lah.. dun say like that! I just want to share my love of the sea to all... I think my message would be "Enjoy the hobby but learn to preserve what we have!". Last time, went I go fishing, I use to throw my rubbish like plastic bags and bottles in the sea. Now I will scold my fishing kakis who do that. My hobbies are expensive but I get a great sense of satisfaction from them... compared to 'cheonging' at pubs last time... 3 x a week = $x00 x 4 weeks = money stupidly wasted! Come to think of it... I could have bought gone for many dives or setup many tanks with that money! Sigh!

SRC Member dfstan Posted September 30, 2002 Author SRC Member Share Posted September 30, 2002 oops! my pics blown up. what shall i do to make it smaller ?
Achilles Tang
I deleted that post... you have to use a graphic program to resize the pix. Try to have them smaller than 640pixel width... around 500 is fine. Try again...maybe since its an anemone pix... you can post it in the reef forum, there is a topic there about anemones... SRC Member Stenopus Hispidus Posted October 5, 2002 SRC Member Share Posted October 5, 2002 Hi AT, Did you by any chance happen to see a similar water proof housing for a Canon G1?
SRC Member newdamsel Posted October 5, 2002 SRC Member Share Posted October 5, 2002 wow.. nice pics.. those acro, Hon and spiff will love them.. yeah.. me thinking of learning diving now.. but not this yr.. due to overseas attachment.. but perhaps by next march.. any recommendation of places to go? err.. i mean.. dive centres... Hi all, I'm also a adv diver thats why I've started a SW tank heh heh... keen on starting photography but camera and casing is outta reach for me anyway dive centers wise i guess all of them is about the same... will still learn the same things. the difference in price is only accounted for by the diff in accom and food. anyway need not get good accom since for a open water diver course, mostly you'll be in water and by the time u get back to room, wun get to enjoy... NARKOSIS~! haha anyway dun expect to see much in your open water course. its all drills and drills in a barren sandbed. perhaps only at the last dive that they'll bring you ard a not so great spot. SO the idea is start learning in not so great places like tioman... after that go aur then redang then perhentian then sipadan. If you go sipadan immediately, all msian reefs are shit i guess... thats what happen when i go to redang first then to aur. The divers are excited about trivial things which is common in redang. esp HUMPBACK parrot fish. the dive master made us wake up so early to go see them urgh~! Achilles Tang
Hi AT, Did you by any chance happen to see a similar water proof housing for a Canon G1? G1? I think you have to order one from Divemasters Pratama at Tan Boon Liat Building. That's where I got my Ikelite G2 housing. You have a G1?
SRC Member Stenopus Hispidus Posted October 7, 2002 SRC Member Share Posted October 7, 2002 Thanks for the reply and info. Will pop in one of these days to check. Need to order? You mean its not like I can go in and come out with the housing inside a shopping bag or somethin’ ? How long did you have to wait for yours? Yeah, I am using a G1 3.3 MP. Very good all purpose d.cam. However, if a genie grants me a free wish to improve the G1, I would like spent it on a better macro ability. I use a lot of the macro function cos I want to observe health and growth of corals at different periods. Ricoh and Nikon models can actually go up to 1 cm and 3 cm respectively but Canon’s closest macro range is 6 cm…Duh! Its good to have a D.cam… instant pix within minutes of taking a picture. Can transfer some pix from the CF card to my PPC and store/view it on a bigger screen anytime, anywhere I feel like I miss my reef tank. Oops…if you are reading this my dear wife, that doesn’t make you second best, you are still my no.1…I swear!
Achilles Tang
Steno, Yeah.... they have stopped holding on to Ikelite camera housing stocks as you know how fast cam models are churned out... They are the exclusive distributor for Ikelite housings... so no prob. They can order in for you. Yeah the macros for canons are not as good as other brands... Hey Steno, do you dive and take pix? There is a underwater photography course coming up organised by FiNs magazine... I got the invitation... wanna register with me? It's on the 19 Oct I think... let me reconfirm that later!
SRC Member Stenopus Hispidus Posted October 7, 2002 SRC Member Share Posted October 7, 2002 AT, Nope, I can't dive…or shall I say…at least not yet. Have been wanting to take up a diving course but the nature of my work is too prohibitive at least for now. The G1 housing which I am thinking of getting, is meant for me to take pictures attainable through snorkeling esp. corals & inhabitants living inside reef flats and where the sun is bright enough to enable better manipulation of shutter and aperture settings. When I pass the diving course, I am sure the next gadget that I will be looking out for would be things like strobes and strobe arms. Cool items yer know. Photography has always been my ###### long before I even got addicted to reef tanks. D.cam really changed my life. I can't bring myself back to using analog cameras. So now my film SLR is emancipating in my dry cabi. waiting for the day it will be labelled an antique. Nevertheless thanks for the invitation. I appreciate that. Hope to hear from you on how fruitful the course turns out.
Achilles Tang
Sure thing Steno! I would really like to learn as much about photography... maybe one day you could give me tips on stuff like shutter and aperture for the G1/G2... Maybe you can also help critique my u/w shots... oh wait... you haven't had u/w photography experience... hahha... so whatca waiting for? GO GET WET SOON!!!!! YOU WON'T REGRET THE SEA!!!!
