this is it fellow reefers, i'm done for. juz a sad update.

i hv received information from my nannies that my tank crashed (or u might wanna say 1/2 crash on wednesday morning ard 4 a.m). Reason being chiller stopped running and temperature rosed up to 32 degrees celsius b4 anyone can do anything abt it. my fiancee discovered it and called my nannies.

roughly at ard 6 a.m, my nanny no 1 (who has been reefkeeping since abt 13 years ago) came over to my place to check out the situation, by then, almost 1/2 of my sps collection were wiped out due to the sudden surge in temp. he quickly took out all the sps which showed signs of rtn and change a few buckets of freshly mixed saltwater immediately......... tank water was smelling very bad it seems. he then proceed on home to catch some sleep as he needs to work later.

nanny no 2 came over at abt 11 am, measured the water parameters, changed another 2 pails of SW. added in 1 polyfilter to the sump and 4 packets of GAC. threw away another 5 sps.

nanny no 3 came over at ard 1 pm, took whatever that could be salvaged including my remaining surviving sps and all of my ric floridas collection, but as of now, it seems that only abt 1/2 of the sps he took r surviving and also almost 1/2 of the ric floridas hv oredi melted away.

nanny no 4 took 1/2 day leave from work, went to buy a new chiller for me, installed it at abt 3pm, checked the water parameters and took some more sps he felt could be saved. took some of my lps too and threw away some more sps and lps.

so far no casualty to my LS with the exception of some cleaner shrimps and assorted snails. estimated loss to be ard 3 to 4k. it's not juz the monies, but more importantly, the effort that has been put in. :cry2:

nannies will be over at my place again tonite to monitor the situation and the next best step to take. :paiseh:

kudos to all my nannies, juz really wanna express my gratitude to all of u. although not much can be done or salvaged, but i know u hv oredi done ur best.

though i was more or less mentally prepared for this situation to arise, but i m still in awe. well now, i feel so "cheng-sim" (saddened and discouraged)....... really dunno how to carry on reefing from here forth.

hope i dun get flamed for this addition to my thread. it's not crap talk, but juz to update ppl who r concerned abt me and to express my heartfelt thks to those who hv cared and helped in anyway. would also appreciate if reefers can stop adding oil to fire by saying "told u so" and that kind of stuff. :thanks:

dun bug me for the id of my nannies too, as i would hv wanted them to remain annoymous right from the start. :thanks:

signing off sadly from jepun....... LS. :(

Bro, I share your misery... :(

It's a 'natural catastrophe' so definitely no blame nor finger-pointing should be introduced. Only foolish man will raise even just a finger. ;)

Infact, through this episode, you have tasted the good sight of mankind through your dedicated angels which came in the form of your nannies.

Kudos to your nannies... :bow::bow::bow:

Dun worry, when you are back, you can 'East Mountain Rise Again'... :yeah::yeah::yeah:

Just remember to use a different chiller. :P

condolences..

i am sure the remaning surviving pieces will be in good hands and waiting to return to your tank....

from this experience, do you think we should install a temperature alarm? so that somehow if the chiller stops working or the pump for the chiller stops working for no reason, an alarm would come in say at a preset temperature for us to take remedial action?

any bros know of such a device?

Bro, I can almost feel how you are feeling now. I lost my AT when i was in Tokyo and felt miserable...yours is much more losses so it must be a multitude of what I felt. My heart goes out to you..

My humble opinion is that maybe reefers with a lot of expensive LS and corals should invest in a system that can alert you if sumthing goes out of whack. I personally am using the IKS to help me monitor the parameters of the tank 24/7 and honestly feel that its a worthwhile investment. Audible alarms and also email or SMS alarms can be configured so you will be notified if sumthing is not right.

I think it can also be configured to kick in Fans at a preset temp like 29 (indicating that the chiller is no longer running) and at the same SMSing you informing you of the unusual high temp...

However, AT, would you kindly elaborate on the protection circuit you have installed pls?

it's actually not only the lights...the return pumps will slowly add heat or even if the return pumps are of low heat transfer type, the water will slowly rise to ambient temperature when we are sleeping...

what if in the middle of the night, the chiller for no rhyme no reason stops working or the pump that pushes water to the chiller stops working....

i am not talking about a power failure where everything stops. I am referring to what happens if something goes wrong only in the cooling system loop while the rest of the system is working fine.

an alarm at preset temperature can help in such a scenario i feel.... :)

for those non IKS users like me, a simple water temperature alarm can alert us...

any electronic DIY masters? cookie perhaps? ;)
