Search & destroy pistol shrimp

I have this pistol shrimp(s?) in my tank and its driving me nuts.

I'm sure it is a pistol coz I even saw its molted shell floating around in my tank

Beside that; I have a few hitchhikers crabs (of various sizes) in my tank and they are responsible for toppling my suncorals.

I'm thinking of getting a hawkfish to search and destroy these critters (esp the pistol shrimp).

Need to ask if this idea is do-able?

Or is there another way? (no, I don't think Jedi mind tricks will work on pistol shrimps)

A baby octopus (not the blue-ring variety) will be excellent choice for hunting down crabs and shrimps... but then you have the problem of catching it out later!

A hawkfish may not be a match for a hard-shelled pistol shrimp.

Blue ring octopus better lah...since their lifespan only about a year. Those that are available almost adult size, probably only live a few months in the aquarium. By then they die out naturally, don't even need to bother about catching them out. Then again a pet cuttlefish might work too.

And worry also that it may crack my tank since I read that the power of the claw is about .22 calibre bullet.

and not to mention my cleaner shrimp too..

I can't write them off as collateral damage lah

a big mantis maybe...my 6" mantis did hit my 4mm tank a no. of times...but no damage...

Dun worry to much about pistol shrimps, they are a great additions to reef tank set-up especailly if you pair them with a shrimp goby. I have 2 pistols in my main tank and 1 in my sump refugium.

But if it is a mantis than you have to worry more. I used to have a 1inch mantis in my tank for about 3 months until one day during power shut down it went down my overflow and got caught.

If I were you, I will introduce a S. yashia or a S. nematodes.

my experience: when setup up my tank. i left the LR in the boxes.

That nite i could not sleep, i keep hearing tick tat....i tot it was my fridge (i just move in). I came closer, noise stops. Next morning, i saw those shrimps. See 1 kill 1. At that time did not know good or bad...later talk to Deep_end and also recommend Octopus. But luckily no more and no need to introduce Octopus.

I did intro a yasha in to my tank 2 weeks back. It was happily swimming in my tank and even swim up to eat the pellets I put in.

But a few days later I see my cleaner shrimp making a meal out of my dead yasha. @#$%@#$^#$^!!!!

Something happened during the night.

I do have some crabs (hitchhikers) in my tank the size of 10cent coin. Did they do it? or the pistol shrimp?

I had read from live aquria that they are peaceful and work closely with gobies. They are also reef friendly? unlike mantis

Its just that some reefers don't want it in their tank

becuz when the mantis is in.... you cant even put yr hand in to aquascape...

no aquascape... no coral... no reef.....

then also mantis has a tendency to 'renovate'... so.... no corals again....

and www.liveaquaria.com also say not reef-safe...

i also put my hand in when my mantis was still ard wat....and they will only renovate the small rocks....not those big ones.

If you believe www.livaquaria....then forget it...

i dun trust a site that considers a cowfish to be "expert care only"

Actually it is not Pistol Shrimp that most reefers are afraid of but rather the Mantis Shrimps especially the Spearer species. Cuz they spear fishes for food.

Another worry is the Smashers species of the Mantis Shrimps will break glass with their smashing activities but again it needs a pretty big mantis (min 4-5in) to do that kind of damage.

Even that, Mantis found among our LR are in fact quite harmless as most of the feeds on pods rather than fishes. I have a Mantis (confirmed) in my tank for several months until it went down my overflow during a power cut, it never give my fishes or even ###### shrimps any problems.

As for the Spearer species, they dun hitch hike but rather burrow themself on the sea floor waiting for their next meal.

I had just added a branded coral shrimp, suppose to be friendly but it had 2 big pinchers. Will attack fishes and my fire shrimp?

I saw the coral brande shrimp doing massage for my regal tang...the fish love it because of ich... Is this shrimp safe? read up from live aquria that it suppose to be peaceful. What other site that I can gather info about fishes, corals and inverberate? I follow what live aquaria said very closely.
