hi bro .. it is use as a water proofing for wire.. hmm for example, ur wire connect to ur light casing..

the dia is 3/4in for connecting the base (end) and able to hold normal wire and wire thickness up til 1/2in wire ( front )..

btw the way... just found out it can also be use to connect pipes to glass of ur sump or tank.. but the pipe end must be thread or have to find a suitable threaded converter.... ..
