the word that usually floats around about cabinets is

chengai wood. correct me if i'm wrong. =)

Kapur also a good wood to use, at least more workable compared to chengai.

i using chengai... it was really really really hard to work with it... very tough to machine, my jigsaw had problems going thru it let alone my chisel...

but the end product rock solid...

Have a veiw on your thread. Is your stand used the kapur ?

The stand has 4 legs to support the tank, it that enough, it seems the kapur is very strong too.

How much u paid for the stand.

Just recd the call from the fish shop, they told me that they wont use chengai for cabinet. Acutally, I paid the deposit to them and agreed to use the Chengai for my cabinet. Now, they suggest me to use "ding pian" 丁片. Anyone heard abt this wood and they told the kapur is soft wood.

pse help and where i can find another fish shop for making the cabinet.

Which shop is that? Chengai however has the problem of staining if you are concern about your beautiful flooring. Kapur are just as good and most expert installers will recommend kapur in lieu of chengai.

More importantly, do note on the ply as the base - use marine ply and lacquer the entire stands.

what do you mean ply as the base? as in the base/bottom of the cabinet? hmm... if i stain the floor, my mum will slaughter me.

Marine ply to receive the styrofoam and the tank at the top part of the stand and also the bottom to receive the sump.

Either use some sort of baseplate (must be a strong permanant item) or use kapur as the alternative stand.

I came across this term "balau wood" in a koi forum. Has anyone used this before? It seems to be cheaper than chengai but equally durable.

BTW, does anyone has any recommendations to carpenters for building tank cabinets? It's my turn to "upgrade".

I am thinking of making a "shelf" c/w covers, so that it looks like a cabinet. But instead of doors, these doors are totally removable. Is it feasible?

IF i remember my sec 5 D&T correctly..... MArine PLy is also another good alternative.. as it is waterproof and weather proof.......
