Unique cup coral

Recommended Posts

Hmm..maybe should have put this thread under LPS section instead. If any mods think it would be a better choice I will support their decision.

Anyway, look what happened after I dumped a liter of rotifers into my tank. Polyps beginning to extend. :yeah:

Close up of some polyps that are starting to open at the bottom. The cup coral is sitting on a plastic stand courtesy of pizza hut. Looks like feeding my tank rotifers will be a daily practice now. :pinch:

Hey FuEI,

Thanks for the info. Boy it must be a privilege to be in NSW and do you get your corals and fish locally. That would be totally awesome if so.

Unfortunately for us we solely rely on our local LFS to import all the livestocks except maybe for some frags which we can get from our local hobbyists.

By the way the first picture of your "old" tank, was that a Goniopora coral on the right side corner of the tank...may I say that's a huge one man!!

Talk to you later.

Hmm..NSW = ? Nah most of the corals are imported here, same situation experienced by you in your country.

Yep, they can expand very big if conditions are right. Oh well, that was a long time ago when I just started out. Now no time for display tank.

NSW geographically stands for New South Wales - Australia.

About 1 hr later. Amazed that the polyps open up at night, had to turn on my lights to take the photo. :pinch:

Noticed this specimen behaves differently compared to normal cup corals. Apparently the polyps only extend after lights out.

Just my 2-cents, if this unique cup coral of yours has a characteristic of polyps-extensions even after lights out, this would mean to say it has no photosynthesis requirements. Then it is certainly a VERY similar characteristic of SUN CORALS, as sun corals are non-photosynthesis, and they are more active after lights-out.

Don't think it's a suncoral. The polyp skeleton does not protrude out alot.

Below is my SUN CORAL.

They extend out like "elephant-trunk". My buddy call it "open half-F***", I call it "Erection".

I am not familiar with CUP CORALS. But man, you have got a nice gem there. Why not term it as "Blue Sun-Cup" Coral. kekekeke.... ;)
