does anyone knows what will happen if thermometer break and mercury leaks into the aquarium??

how do we remove mercury from the aquarium??

really hope and wise someone could help and advise :thanks:

not sure if poly filter n carbon can help.

Bro, me cant advice you on how to remove the mecury from yr tank but do be careful of yourself as mercury is harmful to human being and proper care and disposal procedure must be followed.

Tank : 4 X 2 X 2 with low iron front panel and external overflow

Skimmer : BK SM200 with waste collector

Return Pumps : Red Dragon 6m3 and Ehiem 1262

FR : 2 X Deltec 509 & powered by AB2000

Nitrate Filter : Deltec NF 509 and tee off from AB2000

Calcium R'tor : Deltec PF 501 with RM secondary chamber

Kalkwasser R'tor : Deltec KM500

Chiller : Pansonic 1 HP Compressor with 20m titanium Coil

Wave Makers : 4 X Tunze 6055 with 7096 & Vortec MP40w

Controller : GHL Profilux

Lighting : ATI Powermodule 10 or 8 tubes

Water Top-up : Water Top-Up tank powered by Tunze Osmolator

External Monitor : American Pinpoint pH and Temp. Monitor for main tank and GHL Profilux Controller to measure temp, pH, Redox

Ozonizer : Sander C50

UV : Corallife 6x

What's at the bottom of the tank? Sand? coral chips? or bare bottom? :paiseh:

This is very messy job!

If the mercury leaks into the tank, for sand or Coral chips bottom, you will probably have to throw them away or those in the area. Bearing in mind that mercury is very heavy, after throwing out the chips or sand, it will still be settling at the bottom. Using a suction hose (don't use mouth to suck!!) will not help to siphon it out as usually it is too heavy to be picked up, you may have to look for a capillary suction tube and hand pump (those use in chemical laboratories). Time is crucial, though it will take time for the mercury to contaminate the water and tank, you may still get away with mercury poisoning if you are fast in removing it or else, livestocks, corals will perish over time.

After successful removal, for the next few weeks do regular water changes.

If tank is small, suggest that you dump all and restart, because the concentration of contamination will be much higher than bigger tanks. There is also no harm trying to salvage, you may be lucky and get away with it.

Observe for your LS of any mutation. :unsure: juz kidding on the last line!! :D

however, mercury is definetly poisonous to us.
