Did see a lot of these urchins... Sipadan has a lot more compared to Hin Daeng/Muang.

We did see some awesome big purple with black spines Crown of Thorns starfish. Unfortunately, I ran out of battery power at that dive.

Chris... did u notice the saltwater in Thailand is EXTREMELY salty??! Man, I wished I brought a hydrometer along! I think the sg should be around 1.26!

for all u know, someone or some fishes might had just peed there just as u open your mouth to taste the water.. hahaha

Great pics. I always enjoy scrolling thru your diving pics.

AT, how would you assess the sps situation at Trang? The area seems to be dominated by softies and all the sps I see in the pics are dead.

Hmmm... we also dived at Ko Rock which is very popular with tourists. It is a designated marine park and has lovely beaches. We saw two giant monitor lizards there.

Underwater, sadly, the corals there are in bad shape, ironically for a 'marine park'.

The divemasters say that its due to traffic and anchoring of the large number of big ferries that go there... IMO with the large coral formations that were broken and with large amount of nets on the sea floor, I suspect it is the large number of fishing trawlers that surround the area.

On the return journey, I counted at least 30 fishing trawlers! God knows when its time to rest/escape storms... they will anchor off islands... and damage the reefs.

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are just very steep reef pinnacles that protrude out from the sea floor. The upper few metres had more hard corals but the reef walls had more softies. It was the best spot of the dives.

The other dive spots like Ko Rock also were in similar shape, corals were in bad shape.... bleaching or dead. It could be due to crown-of-thorns starfish or it could just be mother nature itself.

I think the reefs in Tioman are in better shape than the few dive spots of the islands that we went to apart from Hin Daeng and Hin Muang.

To be fair, there were plenty of massive porites formations and other corals around. But few acropora species.

One more chiobu is a Thai friend of my friend's Thai galfriend.

This one speaks fluent english, scuba dives, has a private pilot licence and currently taking a PHD in marine biology, is a house and techno DJ... really interesting woman! :)

I spent more time chatting with her than with my wife on our boat trips as we have a lot in common... ;)

The viz wasn't that great at some spots. The best viz was about 30 m. Most spots hovered around 18m.

It could be the cloudy weather affecting the amount of light in the water.

The magic of digital photography is colour correction. Remove the blue tint and you will get the true colours of most things. It's the green tint that kills everything.
