recommendation for skimmer

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Can anyone recommend me a skimmer for 4ft x 1.5 x 2ft tank. Will be making a 2 ft sump and diy a over flow pipe. But problem is, my cabinet internal height is only 490mm which is very low.

Any good skimmer that could squeeze into my cabimet and place into the sump.

thanks

you may want to consider deltec MCE, APF & turbo series. You have to consider working space for your skimmer. If you cant take out the skimmer, you will have problem in future. Surf the net to check their capability. All the best.

any difference between in and outside sump?

not much diff. out sump model can be use in sump too, but in sump can onli be in sump lol..........

for 4 ft u need a big skimmer but u have to fit it outside....no way a decent skimmer is 1ft in height

Would like to check can Schuan Jetskim 100 suitable if i am going start with Fowlr and probably move into LPS later stage ?

And

Not very sure about what lighting, currently got a set of solite MH 150w x2 (6500k) + T5 55w daylight,

should i change the MH light bulb to 10000k and T5 tube to blue plus, actinic ?

What is the duration to ON both the MH and blue light for fowlr and LPS?

hope some bro could help me.

i don't think fowlr need MH what you need is just daylight and this will be more then enough and the duration for it just bout 5hrs for it to swim around in bright daylight as for your skimmer out sump is better for your type of setting as it 4ft

if you are getting deltec, the agent will be reef depot. If one is willing to spend money to buy good equipment, i suggest buy from agent and not those importers. It might be cheaper but the saving may not warrant good after sales service.

you can check if there is reefdepot seal. If yes, the support will be there. If no, you may have to get the importer to assist. Happy reefing. : )

actually, can i ask wad exactly determine the efficiency of a skimmer? how u deem a skimmer good?

u look at the circulation pump rite? as to how much is the air intake? and its power consumption?

cos apparently, the different brands of skimmers their design looks the same, in the case of recirculating type,

the only difference i find is the pump.

good question. Think no test done on all skimmers in simiilar conditions to assess their effectiveness in skimming out skimmate.....

generally, ppl will see the workmanship, quality material , pump flow, air intake, energy consumption, consistency(subject to tunning or not), reliability, bubbles formed and how fine they are. Judging from current trend, needlewheel is the way to go......cone and bubble plate are popular to enhance the skimming, and size to determine enough contact surface(dont know how they compute or test), etc.

actually, deres another kind of wheel called the threadwheel tt ATI uses. seems to produce finer bubble, however frm the net, ATI skimmer cannot tune the air and water level. is tt true?

another thing is u mention cone are used to enhance the skimming, dn y r dere ppl saying those skimmer tt has a cone inside the collection cup not efficient? any diff in coning the body and the collection cup?

never use ATI skimmer, hence not in a position to comment. For cone, some agree while others disagree......hence, go see the performance and if you are convinced, just go for it. There are ppl out there not using skimmer and are successful in this hobby. Me not expert enough to answer your queries......
