Hi Sherman bro,

My light is 1 meter or about 39.5 inches but my tank is 4ft (48 inches).

But normally we keep a distance from water level and LEDs have beam angle, so it will be covered all place at certain height. Not too high else will lower the brightness.

Check the last photo which shows the light on above the tank.

Let’s do some maths.

Tank length: 48â€

Light Length: 39.5â€

The furthest distance for both ends LED (est.): 38â€

So the distance from one end of tank to one end of light is (48 – 38) /2 = 5â€.

Beam angle: 90 degree.

Apply right-angled triangle rule, the height between water level to light = 5 x tan (90/2) = 5â€.

This is the height for lamp that will cover your entire tank water level from left to right.

You can do same calculation for finding the height for cover your width of tank.

Hope it helps.

However, usually the aquarium aquascape design will not have corals at the far end of each side. Don’t worry if the light can’t cover the 100% of the water at the top.The light coverage area will expand as it goes deeper, provided the light intensity is sufficient. So don’t place the lamp too high as it lose intensity. Also, there should be some safety height to minimize water splashing on it and water vapor should also be taken note.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

So you actually need lens to bring the light spread to a narrower beam to get the require intensity and PAR

as your tank go deeper.

Bros, u guys can seriously consider tag-team n design an ultimate LED light set.. The points above from both parties when combine together into a set should create the ultimate design that increase efficiency due to optimum use n placing of LEDs and reduce cost.. :eyebrow::eyebrow:

Yes, I fully agree that your above first point. Light intensity will greatly reduce as distance from LED increase, and etc.

The wider the beam angle, the worse the light intensity as distance increases.

According to some studies, a plain glass will contribute a loss of 5% light intensity, so adding an external object (such as lens), will only make it worst. I guess lens is just for people who don't have a choice to buy the LED according to the desired beam angle they want. Manufacturers have ways to customize beam angle for LED in order to do without the lens, and also save on product and process costs.

Most major LEDs manufacturers like Cree, Luxeon, SSC ,Osram,etc produce a range of lens for different

application for their own LEDs.

Most of these lens is easily available on most online store.

Ok, found the price at http://www.tmc-ltd.co.uk/latest-news.asp.

It looks impressive, but one unit is 10x3w = 30w for GroBeam 1000 ND range from £189.99 to £264.99 (with AquaRay Control).

That's SGD428 (w/o controller) for 30w. Am I right?

So dollar/watt = S$14.20/watt

To get near to 150w, then need to buy 5 units or $2140 (does not include the frame and freight charge)

If the weight is not too heavy and total size is not a problem, probably your tank can take 5 units at one time.

I like the 5-year warranty and no fan design.

If you think it fit your need, go ahead to get one. :-)

I like the 5-year warranty and no fan design.

All LEDs have life for 70,000 to 100,000 hrs if connected up as manufacturer recomendation.

So I personally think 5 years is nothing.Right?

No manufacturer of high power LED recomend that.

If fact all specify and highlight that you have to ensure good,sufficient and appropiate heat dissipation

if you want your LED life to be close to the manufacturer claim.

So how to run LED without fan?

I agree 100% with u.

Inappropriate heat dissipation design will never be able to reach the LED longest lifespan. This is crucial but most people optimistic think that all LED lighting can have longer life than conventional light. Also, the design engineer will not push the current requirement to max, as lifespan will be shorter. This is not different from driving a car, the engine can’t last long at constant max speed.

No Fan. Who know? They probably have new break thru in technology. But I am rather worried about the heat problem. The main advantage for a no fan design may be for water resistance purpose.

Probably they do the heat dissipation test based on UK weather, so there is no problem. But for us staying in a tropical country, with all year average temp of 30 degrees C, there might be problems without fan. Btw, is it worth to send overseas for service?
