reducing the current from Return pump

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Need some help.

My tank is an approximately 300 litres tank (Main and sump). Currently the return pump is an Ehiem 1262 which should be aroudn 3000 litres / hour before headloss.

the flow returning to the main tank is too strong. The difference between a wave maker and the return pipe is that the return pipe is a lot more concerntrated and forceful.

This resulted to current at the front of the tank being too strong (IMHO). The fishes are struggling to keep themselves at the same spot. I am curious why they are not hiding in the caves and shelter created by the live rocks.

But if i want to reduce the current but not slow down the turnover rate for the return pump. Is there a "return pipe" diffuser that i can use, so that the current from the return pipe is more uniform or more diffused?

Thanks for any advise thatis forecoming.

Bro onizuka suggestion is good. Coz it may cost u more harm than good by restricting the flow of the pump. It mean more back pressure on your pump and may lead to a hotter pump and shorter lifespan.

yea bro. restriction is not good for pump.

if no T joint, can use y joint :D

Face your return to one side of the glass, use rocks to diffuse the flow or drill holes at the return..help to reduce the flow and also act as a safety feature to prevent back flow.

Take it as reference and need confirmation from more snr reefers.

Hi, mine is eheim 1260 pump for my 2 ft cube tank.

The return flow is just nice and gentle.

Yes, I have a T joint that split the return into two sides.

i am using eheim1262 and drill a hole by the side of the return, and though can see the flow is strong, but my fishes can swim from left to right and hide. even my small nemo can swinging around. maybe i should consider a y-joint and see how :)

God Blessed all who appreciate His wonderful and beautiful creations.

Thanks to all,

I shall go grab a T or Y joint. I assumed it can be found in C328?

I am reluntant to change the pump because at this point of time, i gather the turnover for the tank is probably about 9 to 10 times per hour. If i change the pump to help the current, i might inadvertedly create another one next time.

Thanks again....

ha ha.. actually true... since i got the tank from him, might as well seek his advice on this also...

good idea... thanks!

can consider fitting a SCWD with T-joint. that will be sweet.

If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

Thanks LaW,

Actually i was looking at it, but i am not sure how it works, and from what i read, there wil definitely be some restriction in the flow...

have you used one before? can review?

hee hee... thanks... will have to check it when i get home... office blocks all streaming videos...

Basically what a SCWD does is that is alternates the flow between the two pipes that it is connected to. How fast it alternates depends on the incoming flow. It actually works like a wavemaker providing alternating linear flows to your aquarium.

My Setup:

3x2x2 tank with IOS

Equipment List:

Chiller: Artica 1/5HP

Chiller Pump: Sicce 4000

Return Pump: OR3500

Skimmer: Deltec APF600

Wavemaker: Tunze Wavebox/2x Hydor K2/SCWD wavemaker

Lights: DElighting 2x150W MH + 2x 39W T5 Atinic

FR: Skimz

FR Pump: Atman AT-104

Tubby ATO, Kalkweisser Reactor with magnetic stirrer.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the advice.

I was at ReefDepot over lunch. The SCWD idea, although woudl have been a perfect solution, it won't work.

The SCWD is supposed to be sitting on the floor of the tank, directly connected from the Return pipe. unfortunately my return pipe is all the way up at the top of the tank.

Coupled with that, the device is also too heavy to be hanging in the middle of the tank. Will have to resort to other methods, such as a T or Y split.
