Hi Guys. Need some advice on my new tank set up. Its 61x31x42cm. The lighting is T5 x 4 and the external filter is an Eheim Classic 250 (2213) - 440/L per hour. Will be using a Berlin protein skimmer which hasn't been fitted yet. What else will I need? I was told that a chiller wont be necessary if i keep it simple. Looking forward to your replies. A picture of the tank is attached.

The glass thickness looks quite thin to me esp for rimless, the tank will warp overtime and bow out.. Need at least a 8mm for a 2ft rimless...

Anyway if that is out of your concern, other things you would need is a wavemaker, a Tunze 6025 should be just nice, the return from the Canister is just not enough... Chiller is not a must but a plus to have, becos yours is a rimless, it is difficult to fix a fan on, unless you get those clip on or hand on the side types...

Other than that is patience to wait for it to cycle and stock slowly...

Thanks Terryz. Its a Juwel Tank - the Rekord 600. How much would a Tunze 6025 cost? If I get a chiller, which one is suitable and how much will that cost? Will be adding some live rock today. Tank has been running for a week now and the water is clear.

Tunze 6025, if new would cost you around $70+?

Chiller you can get a 1/10hp should do the trick but I normally buy oversized... If you are planning to try out and not go long term on this tank, you can try with 2nd hand resun or hailea, these normally dun last long and will have problem as they goes along... Get a Arctica 1/10hp if you are sticking with this tank, but given the equipment list, you seems to be trying it out first...

Resun/Hailea, 2nd hand should cost you around a few hundreds? Arctica 1/10 hp also around more than $500...

1 week is too short and you have no liverock in the tank to kick off the cycling aka ANN cycle, this process will take at least a month to complete and you will need Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate testkit to verify that the Ammonia,Nitrite is at 0 before you can add any fishes or livestock even corals..

Hi Oprime,

Welcome to our reefing community.

Marine tank generally requires 10-20X turn over rate. Your tank volume is about 80L. That should translate to 800L/hr-1600L/hr. Just relying on your canister's 400L/hr is not going to make it unless you add wavemaker to boost up circulation.

Happy reefing

Canister filter is basically a nitrate

Factory....

i agree.

other altenative is run a multi layer over head filter.

during my old times.... 1st tank , i have a 3 layer of overhead filter. And my future choices of continue reefing till today was the 1st success from my simple tank set up. Fish only..

Hi Guys. Love the camaraderie and that all of you are chipping in! It's like being back in the School Science lab with the exception that we can't really afford to go wrong. Just emptied my first bit of tea colored liquid from the airlift protein skimmer.. Attached are 3 pictures and I need some help on what these things are on the live rock. The first picture is of a feathery creature that retracts when you get close to it. The second picture is of a blackish thing which is soft and awful looking. That's one component of this 2nd picture. The other component is a baby anemone looking thing.

The last picture if of a cluster - reddish with white tips. Looking forward to receiving your replies.

P.S. The tank is a 63 litre and I will be getting a wave maker this week.

First one is a featherduster.

Second one is a black sponge.

Last one, I am not very sure but seems harmless.

All are harmless.

Lightning fast reply dude! Thanks. Do black sponges have any benefit? It really looks unattractive? Should I just leave it there? Attached is a picture of the whole tank.

It might die off during the cycling, not exact benefit but it will make your tank look more natural with all the liverock fauna...

And you need more LRs...

Hi Guys.

1. Isn't the airlift protein skimmer enough?

2. What is a FOWLR?

3. Will get more live rock this week.

4. Where do I get blue legged hermits from in Singapore?

(1)

Problem with airlift skimmer is that the salderwood gets clogged up over time, reducing your skimming efficiency. A HOB protein skimmer(e.g. Reef Octopus OTP 1000) should get you better result. Below is a related link.

Other HOB models on the market are:

- Deltec MCE600

- AquaC Remora

- RedSea Prizm

(2) Fish Only With Live Rocks

(3) It's better to get 1 or 2 big piece than many small pieces.

(4) S'pore LFS

I believe protein skimmer alone might not be enough. Surface skimmer is needed.

For your protein skimmer, you got to freq change the airstone.

FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock - is the easiest setup in my opinion)

No chiller needed, just freq water change)

If you intend to have coral (at least 2x Fan is needed for your tank size)

You can get them easily with low wattage (save electricity  )

Yes, get more liverock... stack them up with hiding place for your livestock.

If possible, do not stack the liverock till touching the tank inner glass. (So in future, it is easier to clean the algae)

Hi Guys. Sharing pictures of the tank which I took this evening. Everything seems to be on track. Next will be the chiller and some corals. Maybe a pair of small fish. There is a sixline wrasse in there as well as two blue legged hermits apart from what you see.

All the best.
