You can try liquid phos remover, definitely less messy. ;)

GFOs usually messy do to dust created during production process. You will need to rinse through.

I have never witness any significance difference in dust with the several brands that I have used before.

Some useful info on Lanthanum Chloride liquid po4 remover

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1333212&highlight=lanthanum+chloride

From this thread a statement made by Randy:

"I'm not a fan of lanthanum for several reasons. The first is that I do not know whether the elevated levels of lanthanum that may result in the tank water are totally benign for every organism we keep It may be, but it may not be.

My bigger concern is that the lanthanum phosphate is not actually removed from the system. Perhaps some is skimmed out, but I expect a lot of it just piles up on the bottom of the tank. It may become available through various processes (like passing through the gut of a sea cucumber), so I would prefer to see it actually exported. I have the same concern with dosing soluble iron to bind phosphate vs using GFO to bind phosphate (which is exported).

All that said, it may be a fine way to go. Much to my dismay, since it competes with my products (Renagel and Renvela; sevelamer hydrochloride and carbonate), lanthanum carbonate is used in people to bind phosphate from the GI tract."

Lanthanum chloride or lanthanum carboxylate for orthophosphate

removal in seawater aquarium - a feasibility study

YING ZHANG; KAR SONG WONG

http://aalso.org/2009presentations/ZhangWongOrthophosphateRemovalPaper.pdf

From the last article:

"Conclusion

Although all lanthanum compound tested can remove PO4

3- from seawater, the

efficiency of removal depends on the pore size of filters. Lanthanum compound could

pass through filters and increase turbidity inside pool. Barry and Meehan (2000) have

found lanthanum can cause significant mortality to Daphnia due to cloggin g filtration.

Small lanthanum particles passed into pool could also potentially be trapped by gill

lamellae of fish.

Therefore, application of lanthanum compound to an aquarium has to managed very

carefully and better to be conducted in a side loop equipped with high efficient filters to

avoid any potential adverse impact on aquatic organisms due to leakage of lanthanum

compound to the pool."

PO4x4 is made from polymer and not supposed to be as "dusty" as compared to GFO.

I have used it only once and find the re-generation part too time consuming not to mention hazardous - especially when I have kids running amok at home.

"How to regenerate:

To regenerate 250 ml of PO4X4 , slowly dissolve, in small steps, 150 gram / 5,3oz of regeneration powder in 4L / 1 gallon of water. Important: The regeneration solution contains corrosive compounds and we advice to handle with care and wear protective clothing at all time, such as rubber gloves and goggles. After dissolving the powder, add your PO4X4 pellets and incubate at room temperature for 24 hours in a closed bucket. Subsequently, wash the pellets thoroughly (5-10 times) in a large volume of phosphate free water until the effluent has a pH of approximately 8. The pellets are now ready to use for seawater aquaria. For fresh water an additional wash step with 20 gram / 0,7oz Salt in 1L / 0,25 gallon of water is required to lower the pH to approximately 7. Incubate the pellets for 2 hours at room temperature and subsequently wash 5 times with large volumes of phosphate free water.

PO-X4 Regeneration Salt warning:

POISON! DANGER! CORROSIVE. MAY BE FATAL IF SWALLOWED. HARMFUL IF INHALED. CAUSES BURNS TO ANY AREA OF CONTACT. REACTS WITH WATER, ACIDS AND OTHER MATERIALS.

Precautions:

Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing.

Do not breathe dust.

Keep container closed.

Use only with adequate ventilation.

Wash thoroughly after handling.

First Aid:

If swallowed, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Give large quantities of water or milk if available. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. In case of contact, immediately flush eyes( lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally) or skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. In all cases get medical attention immediately."

Alternative is to use liquid iron base phosphate remover - Coral-Shop Dispo Phos. They are brought in by Reef Systems and are available in several LFS. ;)

I am currently using concurrently the below:

  • Rowaphos, 2 table spoon in media bag placed in sump
  • Lanthnum Chloride, self-mixed and 2 squirts every alternate days
  • Utra-Live, 1 table spoon mixed into 1litre of distilled water every 3 days 300ml

Phos - Untraceable using DD Test kit.

I'm also using rowaphos in a media bag + phosguard in media bag

will use a small extermal filter to "emulate" fluidizer for rowaphos ..hopefully by forcing water to go thru enclose area will be more effective

wah.. i try to achieve a ok tank with minimum maintenance

so to mix this and that every few days is very Xiong for me ... :D

So how's your phos reading?
I am also using phosguard and rowaphos. Added in matrix carbon and renew too. Phosphate undetectable, as usual. Diatoms and some cyano show otherwise. Phosphate readings may not be very useful as organisms/abiotic binding are taking them, trapping and releasing especially at very low levels. Observations of the ls response may be a better choice

Ur phosphate is undetectable because ur cyano consumes it... Need to give it sometime to work..

The best is to run Rowaphos in a reactor.. it boost the efficiency of rowaphos... Incase of cyano, u can use cyano remover(Although i dont do that)

I run Rowaphos in a reactor together with GBPo4.. Now after my cyano, diatoms are all gone, i just run the reactor to maintain it. Incase i detect po4 again, i'll dose GBpo4...

Can try vodka+sugar+vinegar dosing.... i've never tried it due to DSB, too afraid of tank crash..

That i know. I am doing vinegar dosing. Thinking of trying out red sea no3po4 remover.

bought TLF phosban reactor 150 and new rowaphos

after the initial TEH gao gao, the "dirty" water was easily flushed out and clears up ... used 3 x 1.5L of distilled water

good combination

gona take back my words that rowaphos is messy to handle :P

not as simple as carbon or phosguard but only just a bit more effort.
