KH never goes down

Guys, my kh does not seem to drop. It has been high at around 11-13 dkh.

Currently only dosing Seachem Calcium and amino acids.

Sometimes after a water change, the measured dkh will decrease to 10. But the next day it raises up to 11-12 dkh even without dosing.

The tank consists of sps frags, dosing 6ml of cal daily to maintain my cal at 420ppm.

What causes kh to raise on its own?

Tested my Red sea salt (normal) KH is at 7.

I do a 30% wc weekly but have changed it to fornightly to allow my nutrients to increase due to lack of nutrients in the water.

Have also tested my kh with 2 separate kits and both gave the same results.

It takes 2 weeks for my kh to drop by 2 dkh.

If your calcium is low, your kH will go high. Check your calcium again with another test kit.

A calcium Range of 420-450..Whats Your Calcium? The more lower your Calcium higher your Alk..MG is Another Storey..Higher MG Helps Raise KH And Calcium..try testing for calcium if low boost abit..Until desires and recheck KH

Bro 30%Weekly not to big?

Maybe your KH is high beacause of the amount if new water..so more ions? 18Gallons-10%..I Just 20%Weekly..But if your sps doing well then ok! :)

Seems like there is a chemical imbalance going on in my tank.. my cal is at 420. It takes a week for my kh to drop 1dkh. I used to drip kalk initially but have since stopped. Now only dosing cal daily to maintain the cal. My kh is at 12dkh now and cal at 420ppm. I am doing 20% wc now and will see how things go..

What is your daily consumption level and mg level now ????

The consumption between alk and calcium is 2.8kh : 20cal

If your kh drop by 1 in 1 week, means your calcium will drop by 7Ppm in 1 week.

  • 3 weeks later...

If you are doing large water changes every two weeks, you need to start looking at your magnesium levels. The corals cannot properly calcify if Mg is insufficient. The calcium at 420 ppm seems fine, don't touch it! My tank was at 14-15 KH for about two months and slowly starting to go down when I dosed Ca and Mg properly. There was some hard white crusting on the tank (it was sold to me second-hand) and I suspect that was keeping the KH high. The most important thing is if your corals are not suffering, don't change anything too drastically.

Guys, thanks for the advise. I highly suspect the high KH is due to white slime breakout in my tank.

I've given up on trying to bring the KH down, as long as it does not exceed 13dKH I guess.
