What crabs are good for sps?

Recommended Posts

I always take out all the crabs from sps cos I do not know how to differentiate between the good n bad acro crabs. But I feel that good acro crabs are there for a good cause which can help in pest controls.

Can anyone share some knowledge and pics of friendly acro crabs and the nasty crabs for sps?

Cheers,

James

This is a great piece of sharing by kkk121 and imo the info is correct.

I have a a. Valida that slowly stn from the mid way and I cant figure out why... till I realise that one tiny hairy crab is having a good time eating the SPS.

Once removed, the Valida recovered within a week and thrive :)

Treat others the way you wanna be treated...

I've link this before to a fellow reefer to help id crabs. I use this website all the time for id-ing crabs. As mentioned almost all the hairy crabs are not reef safe. But don't be fooled by the smooth shell ones too. There are a few not reef safe, best to always id them if unsure.

Thanks for the links...

i've got 1 hairy crab that is about the size of my thumb, but i only notice it chopping on coralline algae??

almost caught it with a pincer a couple of times... would it be advisable to catch it with bare hands??

Some bigger good crab also helps in defending the SPS from being nipped by fish.

Unless they are commensal crabs for SPS corals, I would personally avoid putting any other crabs in a SPS dominated tank due to crabs' unpredictable and predatory behaviour and feeding habits.
