SRC Member Sherilyn91 Posted October 2, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted October 2, 2014 i have just started a new tank and i realise there are many worms on the live rocks. they are not tube worms but really worms that come out only in the night.. Now some are crawling onto the glass.. they are very small and difficult to remove.. are they harmful? any way to remove them? the live rocks have many holes and seems like each hole got a worm.. but surely not tube worms.. look like millipede.. SRC Member Sherilyn91 Posted October 2, 2014 Author SRC Member Share Posted October 2, 2014 ooh.. will it still be live rock?
Edmund Koh
Sherilyn, nope it won't be live anymore if u sun dry it. But it is one of the best way to ensure that these worms are no longer in your tank. Do you happen to have a sand bed? If you do, the bacteria from the sand bed should be able to reseed the bacteria in your rocks. Thing is that you would need to cycle your tank for a longer time. RomeoJuliet
Use dead rocks is often better , as it has no worms etc. The only thing is that it also does not have beneficial bacteria, but you can always use prodibio bacteria kit or any other brands to increase the growth of beneficial bacteria. Sun dry for a few hours will not totally kill the rocks please. If not all the rocks harvested would have been dead by the time it reach Singapore. SRC Member Angel Keeper Posted October 2, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted October 2, 2014 It'll take a few weeks to sun dry the rocks completely... You can go pharmacy and buy a bottle of sodium hydroxide... Mix about 1 part sodium hydroxide to 3 parts water... Put the rocks in for about an hour... After that you'll be able to see a lot of dead critters including worms... Rinse and scrub the rocks... Then put the rocks back... Of course you'll lose your beneficial bacteria and probably coralline algae... But to me, it's better than having worms... After that, introduce good bacteria... Your water probably will cloud during the cycling process, but it should clear up pretty fast... Angel Keeper
SRC Member Angel Keeper Posted October 2, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted October 2, 2014 Sorry, it's hydrogen peroxide... Not sodium hydroxide... Angel Keeper
SRC Supporter SubzeroLT Posted October 2, 2014 SRC Supporter Share Posted October 2, 2014 Will it help to run through the live rock with coral dip solutions such as CoralRX or Revive? Will simple traps like these work + place food inside? Quote Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/mysliceofnature/
SRC Member Sherilyn91 Posted October 2, 2014 Author SRC Member Share Posted October 2, 2014 ok i will try that later.. my live rock got sponges.. scrub them off as well? how long will the bacteria come back?
SRC Member Sherilyn91 Posted October 2, 2014 Author SRC Member Share Posted October 2, 2014 add water is tap water ?
SRC Member Angel Keeper Posted October 2, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted October 2, 2014 Subzero, that sounds incredibly expensive... Sherilyn91, if you can use RODI water, of course that'll be best... As for bacteria, it depends... You need to do the checks... Once nitrate is zero, it means you're ready... Angel Keeper
xiggie
Leave those worms and critters alone .... Quote Stairway to Heaven
RomeoJuliet
Dun use tapwater. Best order from Polar distilled water, or buy from NTUC the life distilled water, $6.00 for 12 bottles of 1.5 litres.
