Cardinal fish mystery

Anyone experience the same in keeping a school of red spot tail cardinal or yellow stripes cardinal fish, where when keeping a school, after 1-2 weeks the fish will start disappearing 1-by-1 until only 1 left?

I do not think there is cardinal fish predator in my tank.

The cardinals were feeding well.

Basically this is the 3rd experience of such thing. First time was a small school of yellow stripes cardinals, the red spot tail and recently another school of red spot tail. All after a while, disappear until only 1 left.

The basic risk of adding many fishes at a time still exists... Sudden increase in livestock will increase ammonia and nitrite quickly due to bacteria not being able to denitrify the waste products fast enough...

In my opinion, growth of bacteria is really slow especially anaerobic bacteria... So sometimes it may be wise to increase feeding 2 weeks just before adding livestock to allow your bacteria to accumulate... Then when introducing your school, ease off your feeding regime and dose bacteria at the same time...

My 2 cents worth from my experience...

Does not looke like the cause of ammonia as well since all other fish and anthias-es are doing well. No apparent diseases as well, at least not visible to eyes.

Initially I noticed that the male Lyretail is aggresive towards the cardinals but the second day it tolerates it. The school was intact for 2 weeks where suddenly 1 by 1 starts to dissapears.

Anyone keep school of red spot tail cardinals for at least few months?

Maybe so... Did you test your parameters before you put the new fishes in and when the fishes started sinking? New fishes are adapted to near zero nitrates while your existing fishes may have gotten used to higher tolerable nitrates...

You have to crowd them, as in you have to have a lot of them (not anything less than 10pcs). If not they will just kill each other. Alternatively have a really big tank.

Always something more important than fish.
