SRC Member ryz Posted March 27, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted March 27, 2004 such beautiful works of art shouldn't be made of sand.. ppl are just wasting their time.. sigh.. photos not enough to compensate for the hard work involved.. SRC Member Guinness Posted March 27, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted March 27, 2004 Awesome! The amount of concentration and work involved especially at the top ..... Thing is, these ppl use sand cos its not an easy medium to work with. Same as those who sculpture ice. The satisfaction of completing the work for these artists is paramount. KingFish
They are sand sculptures, a work of art on its own, and as it is in life, fragile. If I'm not wrong, its done by a professional who works on popular Australian beaches, and lives on donations from viewers. Met him once in Gold Coast, typical beach bum with a touch. SRC Member Guinness Posted March 27, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted March 27, 2004 Wanna ask.... isit mud or sand they are using? Seems very red. I have seen these sand sculpturers use some kind of wax or sealant on their works for those competitions.
KingFish
Looks like a competition after all, then its not the guy I mentioned, think even he will have difficulty going at that scale.

Well they are sand, it only that they used some kind of liquid which can hold the sand together. very nice art work.
SRC Member BFG Posted March 28, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted March 28, 2004 Yes they use sand but a different grade than beach sand. They also use water and some mould. The sand will be placed in the mould and will be compacted with a machine that you might have seen during road construction. Kinda like a drill jack or something but with a flat head. Water is added periodically according to the sculpture preference. Not too much or it will be too heavy for a tall sculpture. When they took off the mould, the sand will be very compacted but not too hard like a concrete. They then scrape off the sand to the desired shape and size. Hope this helps! Achilles Tang
If I am not wrong, one of the top sand sculptors in the world actually hails from Singapore!
