SRC Member Clement Chen Posted April 20, 2020 Author SRC Member Share Posted April 20, 2020 This was started back in October 2019 and lots of up and down since. In January was a sad case, made a mistake of adding 2 small fishes without QT. All my other fishes were Quarantined. Velvet entered my tank and wiped out all the fishes except my leopard wrasse. This was my tank before the velvet attack. 1 Quote Clem's Clam Corner (Decommed) 60cm x 40cm x 30cm Tank Nano tank reboot v2.

SRC Member Clement Chen Posted April 23, 2020 Author SRC Member Share Posted April 23, 2020 Some pics of my tank. After the velvet was a outbreak of hair algae as no tangs to eat it up. Now still got a few places that is growing. Waiting for this CB to finish to get some fishes! Tried sea hare but it disappeared after a few days sadly. 1 Quote Clem's Clam Corner (Decommed) 60cm x 40cm x 30cm Tank Nano tank reboot v2.

Den build up of detritus I see, think for reef tank better to chose bigger size sand or coral chips to prevent it from flying around since most reef tank esp with sps need strong flow. With sand it become a maintenance issue. Quote Display Tank : 36" x 20" x 20" Herbie overflow box design, Sump : 36" x 21" x 17", Frag Tank : 16” x 20” x 16”, custom built by Tank Culture. SRC Member Clement Chen Posted May 6, 2020 Author SRC Member Share Posted May 6, 2020 Have been battling with hair algae. My nitrates are undetectable with delivery test kit and using hanna ULR phosphorus test kit phosphate is at 0.021ppm. However hair algae is continuing to grow. The low readings could be due to the consumption of nutrients from the hair algae. Did some research and found out that fluconazole helps with some types of hair algae. I tried it years ago in my old tank on bryopsis and it worked wonders. So I decided to give it a try. Ordered a bottle from reefmarketsg and it was just delivered. the whole bottle contains 10 capsules. 1 capsule is recommended for 40L. Hence for my tank of about 350L I used 9 capsules. I removed the cup of my skimmer and turned off my media reactor. I mixed the powder in a small cup of tank water and poured it straight to my main tank. SRC Member Clement Chen Posted May 6, 2020 Author SRC Member Share Posted May 6, 2020 I will monitor every 2-3 days and update here to see if this treatment works. For bryopsis they said to leave it for 14 days and for hair algae 21 days. Even hair algae is growing on my sps body. This is day 0 before dosing. SRC Member Clement Chen Posted May 9, 2020 Author SRC Member Share Posted May 9, 2020 Day 3 update. I find that there is less algae growth on the front of the glass. Usually have to clean after 1 or 2 days as my tank directly faces the sun. The hair algae seems lighter in colour. Not sure is it just the lighting. Fingers crossed that hopefully the treatment works. Quote Clem's Clam Corner (Decommed) 60cm x 40cm x 30cm Tank Nano tank reboot v2.

SRC Member Clement Chen Posted May 12, 2020 Author SRC Member Share Posted May 12, 2020 So far not much changes to the hair algae. I noticed the algae on the back glass has subsided quite a lot. Also my rbta has been closed since treatment. Hopefully it will open soon. Will post some pic updates in a few days time seems like anemones are far more sensitive to chemical changes from even these ‘reef-safe’ products than coral.. but i believe as long as you don’t see your anemone expelling its symbiotic algae which could bleach it(like one of mine did after i dosed polyplab medic to the main display and some of the globules landed on it), it should be alright Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app
SRC Member Clement Chen Posted May 13, 2020 Author SRC Member Share Posted May 13, 2020 Day 6 update Can see that the gha are dying. It is thinner and shorter. Those on the underside of rocks see no changes. No manual removal have been done so far. Results look promising so far! SRC Member Clement Chen Posted May 18, 2020 Author SRC Member Share Posted May 18, 2020 Day 12 update Most of the gha on top of the rocks have gone. Very little left. However the gha on the underside of the rock for some reason still very long. Have ordered another bottle and plan to do a water change and add more to replace the lost medication. So far its been quite effective. Quote Clem's Clam Corner (Decommed) 60cm x 40cm x 30cm Tank Nano tank reboot v2.
CalvinKlein
Fluconazole works wonders. It took 14 days to rid of bryopsis in my tank but hair algae still remained. I stopped using fluconazole and switched to Vibrant instead as I also had bubble algae. Do continue to update, would be nice to have a before/after shot for comparison after the medication.
