What to put in sump?

Is mechanical filtration redundent in the sump? So we just use bio filtration? Then how do we remove debris? The LRs 'eat' them up?

i tot the de-nitrating bateria will strive onli in an no oxygen enviroment? thats y u need a DSB so no water can bring oxygen into the....deep sand bed. if water keep flowing tru the LR, how r those denitrating bateria grow?

Deep Inside the LR you does have this no oxygen enviroment zone you are toking abt :-) I prefer a fuge just becos it help remove not only Nitrate but other Nutrients as well, also algae growth is encourage inside the fuge than in the main tank due to the 24/7 photoperiod but risk is macroalgae turning asexual.

what's a sump? hmmm....

the waste food will become the food of the bacteria.. there for no need for cotton .. wool will only be a net to hold the food while it rots .. worse for nitrate.

In my opinion, I think a layer of cotton will help to remove debris from the water and make the water more crystal clear. The only thing is the cotton wool need to be replaced regularly like once a week.

I intend to have a 2ft sump for my main tank a 2 ft FWOLR.

base on discussion is my idea workable

-1st compartment fill with only live rock (where water is flown down from a overflow pipe)

-2nd compartment where i put my skimmer

- 3rd compartment I put my return pump

my sump i just bought is a 8" length on each compartment
