Best Method for Changing water

I use a big water container.

1) Premix deionised water with salt, stir manually and airate for min 24hrs.

2) siphon water from sump to desired level.

3) use same water hose to connect a powerhead to pump water from (1) back into the sump.

Find this method easy and less messy.

p.s. try using an old powerhead. Cheapo brand works just as well.

My dad had this siphon thing that he used for his discus before my tank came in

I think you can get that at any LFS (freshwater too) for a low price B)

But if you tame me, we shall need each other.

I use 22 litre palstic buckets (i have a 150 gal tank so i usually change 3 buckets per fortnight = 10% approx).

I siphon the water from the tank, just with a hose, and use an old pump to pump the new water into the sump. The only backbreaking work is then to carry the buckets of old water to the bathroom to tip down the drain - if I am feeling lazy I get my 18 yo son to carry them for me (I knew that there was a reason to have kids!) :D

...i forgot to mention that I have five 22 litre buckets and I mix the new water in three of these next to the tank, so at least I don't need to carry the new water around the house - only the old stuff
