SRC Member gunzo Posted January 19, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted January 19, 2006 read a very very interesting read on reef central .. thanks to some bros here for the reference .. decide to try it out .. today day zero after setting up salinity 1.023 NO2 0 NO3 50 (tetra test) PO4 ?? lets see the results 1 week later .. probably nothing Total cost : $30 bucket - free coral life bucket connectors and tubes and glue - $15.0 sand - grade 0 a 1 - $15 (regret .. should have gone changi collect ) pump - previously used sicce (since no one wants to buy it )
SRC Member gunzo Posted January 26, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 26, 2006 1 week expected .. 50ppm probably upward trend BTW feed schedule is everyday with 1 spoonful of Henry's mix .. that should push up the sheitz level big time .. suns, mushies, yumas, jewels still ok .. SRC Member gunzo Posted January 26, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 26, 2006 Not expecting instant miracles.. since there's no seeding .. I guess I need probably another 2-3 weeks for the effects to show .. CKS .. my DSB is in a pail .. probably 20 over inches deep something similar to a FR .. but pailsized .. SRC Member gunzo Posted February 15, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted February 15, 2006 ok 1 month .. (close to) nitrate 20ppm ... no change for 1 week already .. just wondering if it'll drop lower from now onwards .. Grr ... PO4 going up though gotta buy more Rowaphos
SRC Member May&Bruce Posted February 15, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted February 15, 2006 NO3 test kits are very unreliable - salifert seems the best (most accurate) brand. IMO it could take 6-9 months or more for the nitrate-reducing effect of a DSB to take effect. But keep at it - many peopl are anit DSB, but remember the real ocean has a HUGE DSB Quote Real reefs don't have glass bottoms....(...think about it)
SRC Member gunzo Posted February 18, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted February 18, 2006 I'm using a remote system .. where the sandbed is like 14" deep seems like the effects has kicked started .. 2 weeks no change of water .. and NO3 at 20ppm (tropical marine test kit) Feeding everyday .. I dump in some glucose .. the water no longer turn milky downside is PO4 super high now running a second bag of Rowa .. hmm .. maybe my 1st bag exhausted liao .. SRC Member jc85 Posted February 28, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted February 28, 2006 Any updates? Seriously, I dun tink it will mature so soon. Try measuring using a salifert testkit and stick to it. Switching testkits throughout the test period is not accurate. SRC Member gunzo Posted March 1, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted March 1, 2006 yep already matured and done liao.. constant 20ppm tropic marine.. the spike happened at week 2 and it dropped from there.. lost 3 anthias and 1 brown tang I feed everyday and based on previous experience, I have to change water every 1 to 1.5 weeks otherwise no3 goes above 50ppm and my gonio will not extend.. now already 1 month never change water liao
SRC Member jc85 Posted March 1, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 1, 2006 Interesting finding. Do monitor for the next 2 -3 months if possible. Probably your NO3 will drop further. SRC Member djviper Posted March 5, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 5, 2006 yeah interested to know the results thinking of making buckets of sandbed for my tank if the remote dsb works.
SRC Member gunzo Posted March 8, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted March 8, 2006 7th week.. tropical marine test kit.. quite constant at 20ppm not increasing.. note this is daily feeding schedule.. 20+fishes ..2 poo machines btw no change of water for 7 weeks waiting for it to drop to lower though.. maybe greedy just be careful of nitrate spike during the 3rd week or so.. no bacteria yet/not enough to remove the nitrate.. and this sudden spike can cause havoc on your corals and ls
SRC Member CKS Posted March 9, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 9, 2006 20 fishy!!!?!? how big is your tank btw? i think 20ppm is pretty low already for that load!

EDG
Hi, any updates to your dsb? still working well??
SRC Member gunzo Posted November 22, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 22, 2006 It works VERY well.. I changed to internal sump DSB since then .. doesn't work as well as the sandbed in a pail Flood feed the fishes everyday (due some shy fishes) WITH some algae in the sump and yet the nitrate hovers around 50ppm .. I guess the remote was still best so far ..

SRC Member gunzo Posted November 23, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 23, 2006 Anytime Concept is taken from Reefcentral .. Anthony Calfo I think .. I used a Coral Life salt container and filled it up to 2/3rds full with sand .. I used a 1500LPH pump to circulate the water from the sump to the tank .. thats it !! Jervis, Yes .. I like to see your office tank too !!
