SRC Member cowbox Posted February 5, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted February 5, 2006 HElp! I just bought this white pumping xenia yesterday but it looks like its dying. It did not open up in the store nor in my tank. Is there anything i can to improve it or should i remove it ? Thanks!
SRC Member cowbox Posted February 5, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted February 5, 2006 Decided to remove it as parts of it were falling apart around my tank Wasted $$$!!! Hmph. Lesson learnt: Don't buy xenias that were not open in the store. Smell the coral and make sure its 'FRESH". I smell it yesterday and it had a slight foul smell but the person said it was ok, so i guess trust your own instincts better. Happy reefing still! SRC Member Qxnviolet Posted February 5, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted February 5, 2006 Thats true, i've leant the hard way too....dun buy any corals which dun look good or which hasnt opened. Even a healthy looking piece might be dieseased if its in a tank with dying specimens.... SRC Member YzF Posted February 5, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted February 5, 2006 Xenia can survive in very severe conditions. Suggest you keep at least a bunch it. I seen many ppl throw away xenia because they grow too fast. Not because that they are dying.. Quote YzF's Tank
SRC Member cowbox Posted February 5, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted February 5, 2006 Thanks for the advice. I wanted to keep it but when i removed it, it had that distinctive foul smell and tiny pieces of it will floating everyway around my tank. I had to even change water in case. deadman
hi, also bought my white pumping xenia on the same day as you...maybe the same place also mine became totally bald yesterday....so took it out and there's a foul smell too. yep, guess must really see it open up at the LFS b4 buying juz to be sure
akirasan
Unfortunately that is usually more difficult than it seems, with people picking up, moving pieces around, and even dropping them during 'shipment day', I would think that even healthy speces wouldn't be able to 'open up'. So it's still a hit or miss thing.

FuEl
Most common mistake is to throw it away if it became "bald" or is dropping polyps. Xenia can regenerate very easily, even from a single polyp. SRC Member cowbox Posted February 8, 2006 Author SRC Member Share Posted February 8, 2006 Hi guys, Yup, i believe its a hit or miss. But i think the white xenia is a more sensitive species than other xenia, hence it's vunerbility. But the risk of putting a foul smelling coral in your tank is quite high, hence i did not dare take the risk. Maybe someone who have experiences with white xenia can give some tips? I won't stop getting another one again though hehe Just in case, i did not start this thread to complain or put down anyone. So no hard feelings
Flaming Nemo
Hi, It is advisable to put any corals in a quarantine tank to avoid any dying corals in your beautiful tank. Xiena known as pulsing corals have to be open. It means they are healthy. Below is my xiena i bought for 1 week after proper quarantine: Xiena have to put on the sand bed with strong current. They have sensitive detector on their membrane that flow with current that give them the 'pulsing effect' The 'smell' mentioned is probably the result of ammonia that produced from dead corals.. Hope u get a healthy xiena with proper care!
Achilles Tang
Xenia is known to smell. Dead ones are worse! They are also quite sensitive to changes in water conditions. The jury is out on how well they keep. Some have good success, some have failures. Iodine supplements are supposedly helpful for xenia. Asklepios
Xenia require plankton or target food frequenly I just know that as many tank succeed xenia by feeding. especialy white xenia they's away from red sea and Fiji not only the correct condition , temp but they also want the best quality parameter like sps coral . just my 0.002 cent good luck
