Phos and carbon together?

Recommended Posts

I bought an Aqua Medic Phosphatfilter recently... and since my tank is not too huge, the LFS suggested me put 25% Carbon, 50% Phosphat filter, 25% Carbon to the tube. Since the FR is not too expensive, thinking of getting another one, so can have dedicated FR for Carbon and Phosphatfilter...

However, must bear in mind FR usually creates a lot of resistance to ur water current. So if I am to have 2 FR in a row, I need to get a really powerful pump in order for both FR to work properly. Also, FR requires cleaning or they can get clogged quite easily... that's what I was told.

So for now, since my tank is still new, I will just run a single FR.

Just wanna share with you... hope u find it useful. :)

Her bro speakerphone, u ask a lot of questions lah... wanna start a new thread in Member Tank and Spec section so that we can see ur progress (and lots of pix pls) :P

Correctly me if I'm wrong but I think phos remover tends to exhaust faster then carbon. So if gonna chg the media regularing, that will cost a bomb!

Juz my 2 cent!

True also... but one thing for sure is carbon is a lot cheaper than phosphat removal media... so once the phosphat removal media ran out, just change the whole tube lor... carbon is relatively cheap anyway. But the best is to have 2 FR running with a powerful pump... but I really can't stand the vibration emitted by larger pumps and also the heat generated.

Carbon probably last only a month more or less. Phosphate removers usually last longer (depending on your phosphate levels). So, the likelihood of changing carbon is higher than changing phosphate removers.

I won't put them together.

Hi u r using the Aqua Medic Phosphatfilter? I have difficulty opening the container... sealed really tight and there isn't a manual showing how to do maintenance... that's the only thing about German products... they expect everyone to be as technical as the Germans, lol.

Wow... 2 FR... what pump are u using? Around how many L/h? I guess the LFS is just trying to sell me a super huge and expensive pump :pinch: Luckily I haven't decided what pump to go for...

Paiseh, I mean the phos remover and carbon media is from Aqua Medic. I'm using TLF Phosban! :paiseh:

I think it depend on the max flow rate recommended for yr FR. For me, it's 600l/h for 1 FR, so I get a 1200l/h to tee-off to the 2 FR which hv a regulator to control the flow rate into the FR!

Whatever the brand... must take note of the refill price. I bought the Aqua Medic Phosphatfilter for only $120+... quite affordable right? But a pack of media cost almost $50!!! So whatever it is... must be sustainable in the long run... especially if u r running a big tank.
