Can Chaetos go without DSB in the sump??

And what's the purpose of the DSB??

Lastly, why coral-chip have to be removed??

Currently, my Sump Tank:

1st compartment - Coral Chip

Center comartment - Chaetos only (No sand and No LR)

Last compartment - FR, Skimmer, Chiller, UV, Return Pump to Main Tank.

Is my SetUp OK?? :thanks:

Its kind of strange that you had coral chips in your sump and do not know what purpose do they serve.

Anyway, the main reason why people put coral chips in sumps is that they are porous and allow a very large surface area for different types of bacteria to grow. Of course there are also some who claim that the coral chips actually help supply calcium into the water but I personally doubt that

Ya, I know the purpose of coral chips are for bacteria to grow. But nitrate will also build there right?

So you want nitrate or bacteria?

If I remove all my coral chips in my sump, I will remove most of the nitrate but how about my bacteria>>

BTW my NO3 and PO4 are very high. Trying very hard to bring them down.

Find the root of the NO3 and PO4... there are so many ways to successful control these.

Do a search here in SRC on DSB.... its a way to build a NNR system. ;) Bet you don't know what that is... we have a link to abbreviations here too... check it out!

So I will remove all my coral chips in my sump this weekend....??......

My setup will left with:

3FT Main tank with Fishes and LRs>>

Mechanical filter, Bio-Balls-

Sump:

1st compartment - Another Mechanical filter (No more Coral Chips)>>

Center comartment - Chaetos only (No sand and No LR)>>

Last compartment - FR, Skimmer, Chiller, UV, Return Pump to Main Tank.

Will this type of setup for the sump enough????

Please advise.. :thanks:

Miss out something:

3" Sand Bed in the Main Tank but no sand in the Sump.

Used to have LPS but all cannot make it due to high PO4 and NO3.

Left with Fishes, Mushrooms and Clams.

Since most of ur BACTERIAS are on ur LIVEROCK and Coral Chip ..

DON't REMOVE ALL UR CHIPS one SHOT .. Do it bit by bit over a month .. . or else theres a slight possiblity it might have very very bad effects

since ur removing alot of bacterias tank might clash ...

Coral chip is good .. but they need to be maintain regularly ... coz the detrius/fish food etc get stuck inbetween the holes and gaps .. and start to decompose and increase ur No3 and po4 ..

I use to have coral chip .. but i rinse them in SALT WATER every week to rinse all the dirt and food away .. VERY VERY TROUBLESOME .

Just my 2cent

i use to take hand ful at a time put into a bucket of sea water .. rinse it . and put it into a another bucket of seawater till all is done before transfering all back into the sump..

Or u can Put all into a Washer bag ..before u put it into the sump so u can just lift the bag up and wash ..

How to rines the coral chips?

They are all in the sump piece by piece..

Think he put all the chips in a net and tied it. Therefore able to bring out the whole bag to rinse n put back in the sump. I.M.O, Lrocks in the tank can also produce bacteria, not neccessary from the sump itself. I also see that u do have quite a number of big Tangs. How much and often u feed ur fishes ? Heavy feeding would raise the NO3 and PO4 too. Wat skimmer u using too ?

Feed only once a day (Controlling the feeding).

Using Dymax Skimmer (Up to 800L)(Same as the one use in Aquarama 2007).

Try water change often , might help to lower the NO3 poblem
