do get him to read up on the sticky threads on hw to setup n maintain a marine tank before he embarks.... damsels are hardy... but they make future additions nearly impossible as they are too agressive... try chomis n clowns... shrimps? cleaner shrimps... boxer... firer shrimps or camels are easy to keep....

Hi all,

Recently, one of my other friends have decided to keep marine fish and he intend to buy a 2feet to 3feet tank??Any nice, beautiful, hardy and "cheap" fishes to recommend?? What about shrimps?? Thanks!!

Hi,

correct me if i am wrong. but i would recommend domino damselfish & yelllow tail damselfish. for newbie, i would suggest buying those cheaper fish just to get it going. from what i read up, domino damselfish are good for new tank. since it is more sensitive to water conditions.

Yah Royal Gamma hard to find but Fire Fish is a good choice... Just remember their tendency to jump when bullied, though...

I do believe that chromis, gobies, clowns and even cleaner shrimps are good choices... But the thing is that your friend should read up on that particular fish before he buys... Nomatter how hardy people claim the particular fish is, they will always deserve reading up on.... :)

Chromis may be hardy but after a while look pretty dull compared to others. My advice - finalise your list, then purchase in sequence from least aggressive to more aggressive.

Recommendation (in sequence of purchase):- cardinals, gobies (except mandarin - for mature tank only), anthias, clown (strictly 1 type only, maybe 2 for 3 ft), wrasses/dottybacks & tang.

That may be too many already for 3 ft. blue devil damsel if you like but generally aggressive.

Blennies anytime.

Shrimps - CBS last.
