New Reef tank setup

Recommended Posts

Hi Bros,

I'm thinking of converting one of my planted tanks( 6.5 feet x 2.5 feet x 2.5 feet) into a reef setup. Tank is 12mm thick all round. I'm thinking of having a DSB and would like to eventually go into SPS eventually. Have the following queries (apologies if it sounds stupid.)

a) Is 12mm thickness good enuff for a reef setup?

B) What is the recommended size of the sand for the DSB? #O for the 1st 3 inches and #4 for the last inch? How many bags and @ what cost? I'm trying to do a cost estimate on this.

c) I intend to have an overflow box and was wondering if there was any good recommendation on what to get and at what cost.

Thanks in Advance.

Welcome to SRC and to the blackhole of money.

12mm is good. Very good.

DSB thickness is a preference thing. Some don't like sand at all.

Can get an overflow from ian, i-aqua. Worth every penny. One of the sponsers. check it out at the bottom.

I'm a DSB person, and it is one area I find that needs maintenance and get messy quite fast. But it has its benefit.

PM any of our sponsor for price, as sand most of the time we only buy once and forget. I bought mine at Aquamarine and she let me buy more and return those not use for refund.

One point is that remember to add LR before sand. Otherwise LR will sink into sand over time with flow.

Before you start your DSB, read up on it first.

Any recommendation on the following for the tank of that size?

Protein Skimmer: ?

sand grade/thickness: #1 for bottom 3 inches followed by 1 inch of #4

pump: ?

live rock: How much rock will I require? is 1kg of rock required per 1L of tank volume?

type of lighting: ??

Thanks!

hi bro...a beckette skimmer is gd and the LRs would depend on how you want your landscape to be

just my 2 cents

Since your tank is big, you can either get a huge beckett or a huge needlewheel skimmer

For the sandbed, I'll recommend #0 at the bottom and #1 at the top
