How Often Do you Change Waters?

Nice poll. This discussion has been on a few other forums, often coupled with 'do you skim', etc. I aim for 5% weekly water change using RO/DI water to mix the salt. If I miss a few weeks, I do a larger water change to help compensate.

As I see it, this is one of those tools we have at our disposal. It brings benefits, this is clear, therefore should be part of the general maintainance.

Can one go without? Certainly, but you may need to adjust your expectations or other types of maintainance. Active Carbon will rejuvinate water and additives will replenish some of the missing trace elements. Still, there are items in sea water that we cannot test for and a good salt mix will help to balance these items out.

All in all, water changes balance strongly to the positive side. How often may be governed by bioload, as well as time and cost involved. Like any tool, if you do not use it properly, you won't get the benefits.

I used to change 20-25% per week ( 10-12 bucklet ).. Heavy bioload.. Now less fishes so I change 25% bi-weekly and add bacteria and marine trace..

Nope most of us dont check PH.....just check SG Is In Proper range then goood to goo..bro..

My tank's ph is about 8.3 while the DI water is 9.1. Although i use 8.3 buffer, I still match the ph with PH Down. Maybe I m paranoid. Will try once without correcting the new water ph. Thanks very much, guys!

I have heavy bioload. Export nutrients through wet Skimming and refugium. My water change regime use to be 1 pail per week (18L distilled water with tropic marine salt mix). Now I do 2 pails water change fortnightly. I find that the increase volume helps to dilute the nutrients more effectively. My corals prefer it this way. I only dose iodine once a week and amino acid on alternate days. Nothing else.

Hello James, If you change 36 liters of saltwater every week instead of fortnightly, you will witness even more positive changes in your corals.

Currently have 10fishes. Naso tang, unicorn tang, regal tang, fox face, cream, emporer, keyhole, bi color,regal angels and fairy wrasse. 4 times feeding of frozen food, pellets and seaweed daily. Letting my bio pellet and skimmer do it's job, but currently stopped as doing copper treatment

Did u try testing your freshly mixed water for the three elements?
