hey guys, im on the verge of ordering some magnesium chloride from international scientific pte ltd. i was told that it is 98% magnesium chloride but its not food grade. anyone knows if its safe for aquarium purposes?

Guys, I had moved this to bulk order section so that people with interest can track this better. :)

Hellbliss, sorry didn't have time to get the mag for you.

Suggest you get calcium chloride as well. This one will be more used if SPS tank. ;)

For your info... here is my receipe for my magnesium solution...

1) Get a 2 liter bottle with markings

2) Fill up the bottle to 1400cc of distilled water

3) Pour 246 gram of magnesium chloride into the bottle or it reach the 1800cc mark

4) Pour 46gram of magnesium sulphate (epsom salt - can buy from guardian pharmacy) into the bottle.

5) Stir or shake the bottle till everything dissolve and become clear water.

For dosing, normally I dose about 25ml every 2 or 3 days to maintain magnesium level of 1400ppm.

Do take note that magnesium chloride will melt when contact with humid air. Try to ziplock about 2kg each.

If dose calcium, make sure check & clean your pumps regularly. The calcium will calcify on the warm rotor and cause stoppage.

keeping mag levels above 1400ppm will reduce the chance of that happening.

just wondering, anyone knows what exact amt to dose to up calcium? or have to trial and error?

Maybe just to clarify, I'm not asking how often I need to dose calcium to maintain CA levels in my tank at a certain level.

To be even more specific, if I'm going to dose CaCl powder 94-95%, how much will CA increase by in a bucket of xyz gallons saltwater for every xxx grams used? Something like the instructions one finds on the commercial calcium products we find in LFS. I know it may vary from tank to tank, a rough estimation would be good though :)
