SRC Member sklego Posted September 12, 2013 SRC Member Share Posted September 12, 2013 Hi Guys, Just like to know if anyone keeps a mantis shrimp? Been visiting the mantis shrimp thread (very active) in reefcentral but don't seem to find any discussion on mantis shrimp here. My first peacock lasted 6 weeks and had my second one for about 4 months now and going strong. Other LS in my 80L cube are 2x Azure damsel 1x yellow dottyback 1x domino damsel lookalike but prettier 3x tube anemone a handful of nassarius snails and hermit crabs Would love to hear your stories and learn from your experiences. rgds

spgohjc
I don't keep Mantis Shrimp but I do fish them occasionally. I caught this huge Mantis Prawn whatever off Changi Coast. It's about 1-1.5 feet in length! Not sure if a captive one can grow to that size. If it does ....

Mantis_Shrimp.jpg This is the zebra mantis shrimp (dark stripes across body), which is a spearer while peacock mantis shrimp is a clubber. It is probably the largest among all mantis shrimp species and is normally caught as seafood, i think it's called 濑尿虾 in restaurants.

SRC Member Quas111 Posted October 4, 2013 SRC Member Share Posted October 4, 2013 What's a spearer and a clubber? the spearer has a pike or sword thing on his arm to stab into it's prey. A clubbed has a "mace" like arm it uses to smash against it's prey very very hard until it's shell or protection breaks Dream big, achieve bigger

BamBoo
mantis shrimp are predators, best to house them in species tank.
JoeyBabooey
Imho, manits shrimp should be kept solo in a thicker glass tank... i had a spearer that came in my live rocks when i first started and lost my fishes one by one... definitely should be kept solo. its a killer. SRC Member myintkhine Posted November 21, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted November 21, 2014 I got this mantis about a few weeks back. Its about an inch and it's still going strong. Just saw him totally blocking his tunnel with rock works. It seems strange to me. Any idea about this people? SRC Member iskay Posted November 26, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted November 26, 2014 Wondering if mantis shrimp eat fish ? they eat anything edible but spearers will prey on fish. SRC Member ivanlim Posted November 28, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted November 28, 2014 I'm keeping one peacock mantis for a yr plus. So far so good. Came with corals on live rock. But lucky it did not attack or killed any of my inverts. Now housing solely alone. Fed with mussels n occasionally oyster meat. However if u keeping one, do change water frequently.
