It had been more than 15 years since my 2.5ft marine tank was decommissioned. Marine fish keeping technologies has been improving leaps and bounds especially the new LED lightings, control and monitor systems. I also observed many of you not only successfully keep SPS and rare corals but cultured them as well. It was rare sight then. One thing for sure today, many yesteryears corals & current rare exotic ones are priced many times higher. However I still believe with prudent budgeting and learning through reefers' experiences here I will try challenging myself setting up a basic mixed reef system. Due to time, space and budget concerns I had decided to setup an even smaller tank than my last 2.5ft. It will be a Dymax AIO Model IQ5 Acrylic Tank with effective volume of only 11 litres (3 US Gallons). It will be sited in a cozy table corner next to a few bonsai plants in my workroom. My initial budget for the equipment, live stocks and maintenance for 2 years should be less than $1000. I was very Wrong; I had under-estimated the live stocks especially the corals. I started the setup in early December 19 and currently I had already spent more than $1500. I will try to recap my setting up since Dec19 and will update to the current status whenever I'm free to do so.

Hello! I'm a newbie too I think more senior reefers can advice, but my opinion is: 1. Use RODI water and salt mix cos tap water has impurities that will cause a lot of algae later. I think proper water is the most essential investment. 2. For my nano tank it took about 4 weeks if I'm not wrong, but I think everyone's tank is different. I just checked using nitrate test cos I wanted to save money and because nitrite and ammonia test will be seldom used after cycle (in my humble opinion) but the most accurate way is to test nitrite and ammonia too. If you're testing nitrates only, there should be quite low nitrates at the start, then you will see a large increase in nitrates (this is your NITRITE spike) then you will see nitrates drop and slowly increase or stabilise to indicate your cycle is close to completion. Adding beneficial bacteria and a source of ammonia will help to speed up the process. 3. I think sps is ok depending on which kind? For me some reefers passed me some sps to try and so far they are not dead but I'm not very sure if they are thriving too[emoji28] I think most importantly they need high light and highly flow generally! I think the easiest sps is probably pavona and monti cap These are just my experience from my 1 month of reefing and a few months of research [emoji28] I think senior reefers can give better advice than me! Day 53 Showcasing old and trusty Deltec SC1350 skimmer, previously i bought the BM Z7 but wasn't really skimming much.. not sure if it was due to being too over sized or the design is not ideal. Swapped to this deltec and although its a llittle noisy, check out the skimmate while i have 0 fishes! I believe this is the reason why i'm getting 1ppm nitrate now combined with NoPox dosing. Sharing this acrylic container i got from Daiso, fits my phone and i can snap pic and enjoy top down view without turning off my pumps. Some shots taken with the phone laying flat on the container. Hi all, It's been 16 days since I started with the cycle Ammonia 1.5 (just dosed ammonium chloride this morning) Nitrate 15 Now. I'm wondering why my tank have been cloudy for 5 days. Bacteria bloom? Thought it'll. Subside within a few days and I have not dose any more bio s upon reaching day 14 as instructed. I did level off the sand once as there due to patches from the wave makers. Doubt will create that bad of a cloudiness

Sounds like all is going well. 10ppm is good at this stage. Ammonia is still not at detectable levels (or dodgy test kit haha). Are you seeing any brown diatoms on your sand now? This is the next stage, as you may start to see the diatoms and possibly a brown algea appear. This will last for a few weeks. Adding Ammonia, agree with Mr Soggy, you can add a little to simulate fish in the tank. Reefgrrl produced a daily video of a typical cycle. Is interesting to see (just remember each tank is slightly different) Regarding what to do next. Think of the fish stock. Here is a "stocking strategy" Also I would start to educate yourself on the basics of salinity, Alk, calcium and Magnesium. All the best. Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app

Yes is weird. You should have between 2 and 3ppm ammonia by now. But as both@Indeco and I indicated above, testing ammonia is less important now, you should focus on nitrates (nitrite if you have the kit and want a little more info). Just wait, stuff is happening. So this is the initial cycle. Post this phase you should be thinking of adding a few fish. Clowns, then a six line, then a bristletooth Tang. Keep the lights off! Start your ATS (if you have one) as soon as you can. I would start to think about getting your tank stable. Get into a Rhythm (if your maintenace rhythm stays the same your numbers will stay the same). Good luck. Exciting times ahead! Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app
