Bacteria Dosing

Hi Seniors,

May I know when you mentioned about bacteria dosing, what are the brands and type you used and recommend?

How do I know that I am doing the correct dose and bacteria are thriving?

I have dose bacteria in my tank (no LS still cycling for many moons) and dump a few piece of chop prawn, I see the prawn are turning red and rot. Does that means there are bacteria decomposed the prawn?

Thanks!

I am using prodibio biodigest for many years with good results. On top of that I'm dosing vodka. A few months ago I swtich to different bacteria brand and my tank filled with red stuff, probably cyno. I switch back to prodibio, it is back to normal now.

As for your tank, circulate the water well and be patient to let your tank cycle for a while before puting any LS.

I have also encounter cyano outbreak when using certain bacteria. For me, I have tried the below with good results:

  1. Prodibio
  2. Microbe-lift
  3. Rowa
  4. Fauna Marin
  5. Pries

I am also contemplating trying out Polyp Reef-resh, here's some write-up about it:

For Prodibio, do you use both biotrim and digest?

Biodigest is the bacteria culture while Biotim is the food for these bacteria.

Cheaper than vodka, you can dose using sugar. Sugar is also a source of carbon (the molecules are C based). Just google it.

+1....agree

But my case after i rescape i run bio pallet beside dosing mb7 regularly seem to be futile. No3 still hovering 10-15ppm so decided to dose vodka again. This time round more cyno appear decided to change strategy adding vodka mixture 50% with vinegar

50%. It seem work for me this 2mnth all sps color back n good growth. No3 now at 5ppm awaiting to drop further. No doubt some other factors good stable water para after deploying dosing pump ca mg kh as well as my own fomula in dosing d mixture of carbon dose.

Lesson learn anytime u adjust bac content in ur system things change including amount of carbon dosing. In my case i taken alot of my LR bac content out.

Macrobater mb7 by Brightwell is my go..

Mix reef-Main tank 3x2.5x2.5ftA

TI 3ft 8tube

Hitachi compressor unit 1HP

1 x AP- 702 Deltec

1 x Coral Lab CR with Ph controller; 1X AquaMedic Kalk Reactor top off

Baby fish dosing kh/Sr&Kcl/mg

DI water thru kalkwasser

1 x Skimz Fr with BRS gfo

2 x Rio 32hF main pump

1 x Pinpt Orp monitor

1 X Pinpt Ph monitor

Aquamedic wave maker

Sump 3x1.5ft plumbed together with;

1.5ft cube live rock

Frag tank 5x1x1ft

I agree. Although Bio-pellets, Vodka, Sugar and Vinegar are Carbon source, different strains of bacteria will utilize it differently. And reefers needs to find the best match to their systems if they are embracing any particular brand as a whole. The easier way, I feel is to get bacteria and carbon source from a single particular brand (Prodibio with Biotim) or find a match that has been tested with good results by fellow reefers.

If you intend to try matching yourself, you will need to be patience and use good judgement to ensure that you do not cause more problems such as cyano or algae bloom or worst tank crashed.
