Adequate calcium = coralline growth?

PO4 needs to be controlled, else you'll see no coralline.

Wilson, sorry ar.. I bet the differ on this in a way.

High PO4 mean very slow Coralline Algae growth.

In my old tank which had high NO3 & PO4 constantly I had coralline growing all over at the end of the 1st year.

IMO, stable KH + Ca + St + Mg is more critical. And, your lighting + clarity of water play a big part too. :)

dude, you could be right!

i commented based on my personal experience... coz mine used to have high PO4, coraline growth is slow (virtually none).

maybe it's my Kh. Coz the rest of the parameters (Ca, Mg) are quite stable, yet my coraline is not growing.

I guess the layer of detritus gathering on my LR is hindering too, you think?

So which parameter is the one that cause coralline growth?

6.5 * 2 * 2 + 3.75 * 1.5 *1.5,(Decomn on 14/9/08)
4*2*2 + 2.5*1.25*1.25 (Decomn on 1/8/09)

My rocks have turned quite purple within 3 months from start of tank. Coralline algae is starting to grow on my tank walls, and I have to find a way to scrub them off. I have no idea what factors contributes to coralline growth, so I will just list out what i think I'm doing right to encourage growth

1. Lighting period: 8 hrs daily

2. Calcium: I think it's maintained around 380-400ppm

3. NO3 <10ppm

4. PO4 undetectable

5. PH Range 8.0-0.2

6. KH kept between 9-11

6. weekly 8-10% water change (I have not tested for mg, st, etc.)

7. DD H2Ocean Salt

I used to dose purple up for the first month of cycling, either no effect or tank still too new, but after I finished, have been dosing calcium weekly in my water change, no set amount actually... just 2-3 capfuls every week...

Alternatively, you can get the "Purple Up"...think is around $25/ bottle.

Just to share:

I had also wanted to get, but was being advised that the water PH must be consistent at ard 8.2-8.4 if not the product also dun help....

something to take note?

not true about low lighting increase growth,

my current and previous tank experience v fast growth.

im using 250Wx3 and formally 250W x 2.

those high up with strong flow will grow first.

CA and MG must be incheck.

at least 380ppm for CA and 1200 for MG in my experience.

thats what happen to my current tank. Those who saw my tank in mid jan to mid feb will know.

from my observation, wavemakers in mytank, reefers tank, lfs tank are always the first few that grow coralines. i believe smoother surface and min to no relocation or cleaning/scrubbing will increase the speed of growth. even return pipes outlet in tank do get them easily.

p/s: i have not and never dose or run any kalkwasser or Kalk reactor.

since some reefer suggest KR works, might be likely CA,MG,KH is involve. since Kalk affects them. pH maybe a concern too.
