If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

what about LED's.

Been to a few LFS and mentioned LED is not sufficient for SPS , they after trying for a few months, slow growth seen on their SPS show tank .

After switching back to MH, SPS started branching out and growth seen.

I'm now torn between the 2, as I'm thinking of upgrading my light from my current 2x150 watts setup to either 1x250 or LED for my 3x2x2 tank

Yes need strong LED to make the sps grow fast.

Too strong also will kill them.

LED is still at infancy and people are still testing them. A good brand which has done lots of testing is solite but too bad, close down because of copyright infridgements. Many manufacturers/suppliers will face these problems soon.

But to me, sps should not grow too fast, as they will outspace the tank, requre lots of calcium etc..

If I continue to use my 150w MH and place all current and future SPS on the top, will my SPS grow ?

I've attached picture of my tank

Growth is dependent on several factors which lighting is one of them. Water quality on the other hand is also quite important. In fact, it's the most important! IMO, if you can keep the water clear and nutrient free, you do not necessary keep those not-light-demanding spses such as monti on the surface. They can be placed somewhat near the mid section of the tank to provide another dimension to your tank because the light penetration can go deeper and further even with a 150W mh. There's this RC tank of the month 2 months ago (if I am not wrong) which was running on 150w mh supplementing with T5s and his SPSes are BOOMZ! :D Also, there's this reefer in RC called Robertus whose old tank used to be running on several 150w MHs. His tank was BOOMZ too! :D :D So yeap (:

150 or 250W, also look into your pocket and your long term commitment into this hobby before deciding. Electricity bills can be a killer when running on MHs.

Just my 2 cents.

Happy Reefing,

a lot will depend on your tank size and depth. I just did par measurements on my tank with 250w mh and then with 6x39w t5s. http://reeftools.com/live/forum/showthread...=114&page=2

However, to a point, 250w will be better than 150 (unless your tank is so shallow that you're cooking your corals. I love 20k bulbs. Are you going with SE or DE bulbs? Radium 20K is nice. Or you can go with a lower temp bulb and supplement with T5's or LEDs. Hope this helps.

Why not do a 250 watt vs 230 watt side by side comparison?

Its more accurate
