A question to ask reefers and pros out there.

How long does it take coralline algae to grow?

I have been dosing PurpleUp for about a month now...

Tank parameters:

Cal - 480ppm

Kh - about 11 degrees dKh

Nitrate - about 0

Phosphate - about 0

Water temp - 25 to 26 degrees C

Since you are using purple-up, there is some MG being dose but not sure enough a lot.

Also need to know condition of your rocks and system maturity as well. You may need coraline "seedings" to have a quicker reaction for new tanks.

Mine took a couple of months beside I see it spread. The few 2 to 3 months, I get coraline spots here and there.

Just a note, coraline is nice to have but once it spread like wildfire, it will compete with your corals for space. I had personally seen tanks with them over-running the corals.

go test for MG. keep it consistently above 1200. your Ca levels are good. growth should speed up in no time

If conditions r right, the coralline algae will appear almost within a week. Ask the Iwarna people if u bought Purple Up from

them. Otherwise, even after a yr u'll still see nothing.

Personally,

I do not think that purple up is required in coraline growth. This has been discussed in reef central forum as well.

Purple-up had both Cal & MG and also help to boost the KH. This is IMO a lazy man dosing liquid which is 1 of the reason why it was produced. Rather then buying seperate Cal & MG supplement.

I agree with Thomas Lim comment that once this coralline start to 'grow', at first it looks nice due to its purple colour shades.

But as it started to 'appear' on more and more rocks, be it live or dead rocks.

It also 'overrun' yr corals and 'cover-up' and kill the corals.

With that, I remove those pieces and scrap them away with a hard brush to limit its growth.

Need to do this at regular times to prevent its 'wild fire' growth...

Another thing to note when you had lots of coraline algae growing/blooming.. It will consume lots of your Cal & Mg too. Your corals tend to suffer as they 'fight' with the coraline for the Cal/Mg/Strontium among others to grow. So you need to be more generous with your supplement if that happen.

Like what Bro gny mentioned, regular scrapping will be needed. So enjoy the growth while you can.

Thanks for all the replies!

My Mg level is at about 1300.... however its been a month n yet no growth detected.....

From all the responses of the pros above, it seems that its not really that good to have coralline

algae growing in the tank at all due to its fast growing nature..... thus making it quite equal

or sort of same to the other unwanted algaes....

Will stop dosing purpleup then... sure dun wan them to be a pest in my tank!

Its better to have coralline than nuisance algae (ie. Green hair or red slime), coz if it grows, others don't. It colors up your tank as well, so IMO its good to have them. However, like what they say, too much of a good thing can lead to other issues, but I believe are easier to solve than having nuisance algae.

First and foremost, not even sure if the coralline algae will grow...
