Have only change water once since I’ve started my tank is almost 3 years now have not change anymore so far thank god all LS, SPS & LPS fishes are healthy.

Water check is done monthly once, I do encounter some minor problems here and there with some of the perimeters but during the next water check all seems to be normal.

Best advice is try not to panic when any of the perimeters goes haywire for every action there is a reaction let nature take it’s cause.

Honestly saying at times I do wonder if by not changing water will it be impinge on my tank in long run but for now I’ll just wait and see.

Tank size

1. 4x2x2.5 with DSB

Water perimeters are as following check on 170307 using Salifert test kits

1. PH:8.2-8.3

2. NO2:0

3. NO3:0-0.5

4. NH4: <0.5

5. PO4:0 (Using Rowa FR change yearly once).

6. CA: 412

7. KH:10.2

8. MG: 1280

9. SR:16

10. Redox 459

11. Specific gravity 1.024

12. Salinity 32ppt

13. Alkalinity 3.66

14. Temp 25-27 deg C

Equipment use is as following

1. Light 6 tubes ATI 2x blue on for 7 hours the other lights are on for

4.5hours

2. Chiller Teco TW6 temp set is 25deg c

3. Equipment H&S skimmer

4. RM CR with Rowal Lite medie 80% GEO MG Media 20% Dennerle Ph

controller set to 6.26

5. RM Kalkwasser reactor using Kent marine media link with DIY auto top

via fresh deionize water.

6. Sander Ozone C100 with Aqua medic mv computer set to 400

7. Turbo twister UV 36

8. Tunze Wave box

Supplement use

1. Tropic Marine pro coral mineral 2 spoon weekly once on Saturday

2. TM Bio Strontium 1 spoon weekly once on Thursday

3. TM Magnesium 1 spoon weekly once on Tuesday

4. Salifert Natural Iodine every 3 to 4 week once uses 25ml.

5. Reef builder 2 spoon two to three months once.

6. Active Carbon is use 3 months once for two days only.

I’ll like to have a clearer & better detail understanding from the experts’ & gurus out there. Why is it a must to change water when actually evaporated water top up with fresh water is good enough?

Lastly I wonder if there are any more people out there like me who have not change their water if yes, please share your feedback & inputs. :thanks:

i change my tank water about 15-20% weekly as my tank volume is small.

There are various reason why people change water.

(1) nitrate tend to accumulate b4 it can be remove by the system. So, changing water might lower the nitrate.

(2) to replace trace element. I believe there are just some trace that some of us might not be able to dose back.

I believe volume play a part in changing water. So tank with small volume like mine is better to change water IMO

My 10gallon Nano, no water change since 2004. Doing well, RBTA splitted 3 times. No chiller

Chronology

Feb 2002- New tank commission, cycling

Mar2002- 20% water change every week

Aug 2002- 20% water change every 2 weeks (coralline algae forming)

Jan 2003 - 20% water change every month

Jun 2003- 20% water change every quarter

Mar 2004 - last water change (coralline growing on glass)

It almost maintenance free now... ha ha ha... of coz still need to feed the fishes everyday

Hi Ernie,

I am most impressed to heard your amazing feat. I'm keeping a 12gallon nano too and trying to keep things going with a weekly 80% water change. Can you show me a pic of yout tank with 3 RBTA?

Thanks in advance! :thanks:

I change water every year....at december when i am on leave....

Think i am the only one to do so once a year.

My fishes and soft coral doing fine though. My blue tang, purple tang, clowns and damsels had been in my tank for 5 years (my naso however died last year after been in tank for 4 years).

We can see some change often and others sometime. For me I change water weekly about 50-75ltrs coz am using NSW (cheap) which is low in mineral element. I beef up all element by adding supplement in the water change as well as drip daily that is Magnesium Chloride, Calcium Chloride, Calcium hydroxide, Sodium Bicarbonate and Potassium Chloride. All this element buy in bulk (cheaper but some set back). Other additives all I get them readily on selves (strontium, iodine, pro coral mineral, A+ element)

Am not that expert but you can see the chloride ion is not balance after such additive added daily. So this is why, I do water change often as to keep in check all element balance and my sps, lps and softy w fishes live happily. If u using sulphur denitrator, sulphate ion increase due time also.

Our mate above using reputable additives readily on selves which are all in good composition for use in our little glass ocean. Yet using dsb (deep sand bed) of correct depth will give u balance aerobic and anerobic condition (denitrating factor) which give u lower nitrate.

Check water parameter is a must forthnigthly or at least a month to keep up with the element in the tank. The best for busy reefer IMHO get a electronic water controller which will tell u at least the major important element for a stable water condition.

Bro angel77 just wonder how u can achieved high redox reading in ur tank cos i hardly can go beyond 350mv. Thanks.
