Digiman
Hi all Bros , currently i have a RG in my 5 footer and am thinking to add another. Do you think it will be ok ? its a FOWLR tank . Definitely! Your tank is very big. You should give it a try and update us the result. for the male or female species, is there a easier way to tell them apart? Thanks. The only tell-tale signs are males are larger in size, and brighter in colours. There is another difference observed by a breeder that the ventral fins on the males are longer and do not have a sharp point while the female RG have shorter that ended in a sharp point. However this observation is not written in any literature and as such may not be fully credible but still it can be an interesting trait to consider while looking for a male royal gramma. Do update here if u or anybody else manage to find a male-female pair and verify if the above observation is true.
Digiman
Anyone has a Royal Gamma in a 3ft together with a black cap? Thanks I have kept both but not together. From my experience royal gramma is a more dominant and bolder fish than black cap. So if putting them in the same tank would be a problem, the black cap will likely be the suffering party. CFOh
Anyone has a Royal Gamma in a 3ft together with a black cap? Thanks Yes, you can.. better success rate if proper QT before introduce to main tank. Also not suggested for new system because of stress level increase due to water stability. Add more hiding place will help to reduce aggressiveness. Cheers & Happy Reefing... tqut
thanks I think I'll try to add the black cap first before the royal gamma
Digiman
thanks I think I'll try to add the black cap first before the royal gamma That will be a better sequence. Blackcap are rarer and more expensive. So if u were to risk losing one it will be the royal gramma than the blackcap.

SRC Member woyeng** Posted June 10, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted June 10, 2014 A very nice and underrated fish. Able to hold its own and yet get it's breakfast and dinner. Oso able to showcase its colors at the main tank face. Overall I give it a 7/10 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
SRC Member Tony Gill Posted June 11, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted June 11, 2014 A decade or so back, I started a study of Gramma "loreto", as it seemed there were multiple species involved. Unfortunately that study has languished on the backburner, and it seems unlikely I will be able to get back to it in the near future. In a nutshell, it seems real G. loreto (from Cuba) is a mostly yellow fish, with purple restricted to the head area. Aside from coloration, there are scale count and some morphometric differences between that form and the one more usually identified as G. loreto. Do update here if u or anybody else manage to find a male-female pair and verify if the above observation is true. I have a mating pair in my tank. But dun know why one fish has some of its purple scales becomes white. Will try to take a pic. Really need strong eye power to differentiate the ventral fins difference. Not sure if it's the male or female tat builds the nest. Tat fellow will pick up algae and all sorts of debris to block up the nest. I got some of my seafans(I frag them and place every where in the tank to see which type of water flow the seafans prefer) which I glued to rocks but later found they end up at the nest. Will post pic tonite. Quote Tank size:36"x36"x24" Return pump" 2x Reef Octo 5000 Skimmer:BK Double Cone 200 on Reef Octopus DC 5500s. SRC Member LittleBurger Posted July 6, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted July 6, 2014 This is supposed to be a male. Cos it builds the nest and according to articles I read. Supposed to be female. Planted
Enjoying my read about royal gramma. Certainly did not regret getting one! Would like to understand the average lifespan of royal gramma in captivity. Anyone have been keeping for more than 2 years?

vogel88
The amount of yellow on a royal gramma is highly variable. And how much yellow differs by the geographical location where it is found. Here are a few examples. Common coloration, the only ones we are getting here in singapore. Shown below is a Belize specimen. belize.jpg With slightly more yellow. Nassau Bahamas. nassau bahamas.jpg And now with a lot more yellow. Grand Cayman. These Grand Cayman variant are gorgeous but sadly not collected for the trade. grand cayman.jpg Grand Cayman looks real beautiful
